What is working from home like at Xero?

      Xero reviews

      Xero

      Senior software engineer
      Current employee
      Auckland, Auckland
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Good pay, decent tech stack, heaps of learning opportunities, high caliber peers, shares, great offices, work from home and flexibility

      Cons

Politics, it's all about optics. Some processes are not well thought out.

      1

      Great exposure and learning opportunities

      Program lead
      Current contractor
      Auckland, Auckland
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Large business with a global focus. A lot of work across different time zones and markets. Opportunity to learn a wide range of skills corporate skills. Fast moving company

      Cons

Like any global business most teams are not in the same place and many work from home a lot of time.

No longer a leader in technology

      Lead engineer
      Former employee
      Perth, Western Australia
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Great people, really helpful and human. - Good WFH policy with lots of perks when you come into the office. - Good product that most customers really appreciate using. - Great to get experience with multiple areas of software development

      Cons

      - Lack of strong technology leadership and direction, no CTO and years of focus on product means changes have been mostly cosmetic and additive. - Changing role expectations after reset, instead of change management or supporting employees through this transition, company policy seems to be to use performance management to achieve compliance. - Engineers are expected to take on role of scrum master, product owner, delivery manager, release manager, devops, QA, architect, document, risk manage, organise and configure after hours support, etc. while the multiple layers of management on top are also constantly asking questions or to do work for them. - Complex and old code with lots of tech debt and little time to do coding or learn the codebases (see above point). - Moving away from teams assigned to a product, to teams working on next highest priority project, which could be in a different domain, and most domains are already full of tech debt with little consistency.

Consider Carefully Before Joining – It's Turning into a Disaster Here

      Engineer
      Current employee
      Melbourne
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Great people, really helpful and human. - Good WFH policy with lots of perks when you come into the office. - Extra leaves

      Cons

Engineers are expected to wear multiple hats—scrum master, product owner, delivery manager, release manager, devops, QA, architect, documenter, risk manager, and even handle after-hours support—while dealing with layers of management constantly asking for more work or questions. There’s been no salary increase in the last three years, despite performance reviews being treated so seriously that it feels like employees are forced to focus only on proving themselves, leaving little room for team building. The environment is selfish, and higher management tends to favor long-standing staff, while newer employees are at risk of being let go under the guise of performance issues. I wouldn’t recommend a junior or mid-level developer to join here. They only seem interested in hiring experts and have little regard for those still growing in their careers.

      Great work experience and learning

      Software engineer
      Former employee
      Melbourne
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Work life balance, great office, option to work from home

      Cons

Fast pace, focus was changing very often

      Good culture overall

      Engineer
      Former employee
      Toronto, ON
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

-ownership -work from home -free lunches

      Cons

-culture is changing a bit -slow to ship out features

Small town company in big city cosplay without the benefits of either

      Intermediate software engineer
      Current employee
      Auckland, Auckland
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Flexible hybrid working - work from home as much or as little as you like - Health insurance is amazing

      Cons

      - Huge corporate culture shift has rendered Xero unrecognisable from the workplace it was ~3 years ago - Employee experience can range from okay to horrific depending on what team you’re in (massive domain favouritism) - There has been huge amounts of silent firing over the last 2 years, as well as “sabotaging” great engineers with a PIP and terrible performance reviews if costs need to be cut. Have seen firsthand that managers will doctor and remove evidence from your performance review to make you look worse - Pay is lower than ever - Company is leaner than ever - I’ve been in a few teams now and all of them are incredibly stretched for capacity. And they’re always looking to cut more. Not sustainable. If you’re an engineer, expect to be on call at least every 3 weeks because the rosters are too small

      6

Stay away unless you can handle mid management politics

      Senior software engineer
      Former employee
      Melbourne
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Work from home, great people and lovely office

      Cons

Xero has shifted from being a customer-focused organization with strong human values to one driven primarily by profit. The company has replaced much of its senior leadership with executives based in the U.S., many of whom come from Google or Uber backgrounds and bring a "we know it all" mentality. This shift suggests that Xero is trying to emulate a typical Silicon Valley tech company, where employees are seen as numbers and easily replaceable when needed.
