As is the case for all academia, QoL depends entirely on how well your boss decides to treat you. I.e., Advisors have little to no administrative oversight or common mentoring standards among them. Pick your bosses wisely.

The graduate student union at U-M has negotiated extremely favorable vision/health/dental plans for students. I've taken care of tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical procedures while employed. The pay is decent enough to live in Ann Arbor and you get plenty of flexibility as a student.

A lot of this is dependent on your advisor and program. Be sure to ask around about professors before committing to a particular lab.
