How is management perceived at Tesla?

      Tesla reviews

Good pay horrible culture and management

      Anonymous employee
      Current employee

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Pay and at engineer level you’re going to find the best talents working there

      Cons

Everything else, management is horrible everyone is so spread out that when it counts you don’t really have a direct manager but oh how they love to micromanage, some if not most don’t have any idea of what their own people do and promotions are based on who direction likes better

Great health insurance but toxic management and high turnover

      Automotive service advisor
      Former employee
      Cypress, TX
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Health insurance was great and affordable.

      Cons

Hourly rate seems great up front especially if it’s your first time in the position, but once you truly get your feet wet, you’ll realize that the service advisors are horribly exploited with the many hats they have to wear compared to the same role at other service centers in dealerships and such. Salary was equivalent to the lowest producing service advisor in other dealerships. If you match the workload at Tesla to a commission based role in a dealership, you’d make possibly close to 6 figures. There’s also inconsistency in operations and procedures. Turnover is absolutely ridiculous. Out of the whole facility, there was maybe a single digit amount of employees that actually worked there for over 3 years. Management is also toxic and tend to passively retaliate if you decide to challenge them or address something you don’t believe is right, especially if they get proven wrong in the end. If you come in with previous automotive experience, be prepared to bump heads with most of the management team. Most of the management have never done anything in the automotive industry and will get offended if you voice something to them based on your previous experience for execution. And if you’re neurodivergent in any way, DO NOT share with management. Even if you believe it’s to get them to better understand how you work, think, and process things. They will become passive aggressive with you, and since some managers are personally brought in by other managers who are friends outside of work prior to employment, you won’t get anywhere reporting them.

      Pros

Tesla has provided an inviting work environment with flexible schedule, great benefits, and a supportive management team. I was provided the training and tools to do my job effectively along with the opportunity to train and grow.

      Cons

Work life balance was an issue

If you can work somewhere else, do it.

      Architect

      Business outlook

      Pros

Opportunity to try something “new” but it’s definitely NOT cutting edge Put on your corporate mask - you’ll do at least OK benefits I guess?

      Cons

Managers are so new, inexperienced, petty, controlling, territorial, micro-managerial, sarcastic, and non-understanding. Stroke their egos and you’ll be okay I guess. This was made clear to me as they keep the people who talk and suck up, but don’t actually do any work. These people are all “personality hires” who don’t know how to do anything. Managers will cast doubt on you and never believe a word you say, especially in instances of requesting time off or going to the doctor, or working from home on the off occasion there is inclement weather, or personal issues. They would be easy on themselves when they had things come up and do whatever they wanted to do, but the same grace was never extended to people working under them. Rather than communicate if something is being done wrong, managers will use sarcasm and use sick mental games to put you down. I told my manager on multiple occasions that if I’m doing something wrong, please tell me, but no….every one-on-one I was told everything is okay. Until suddenly I was let go and given clearly made up reasons. The micromanagement was seriously confusing because one second I was told to check with my manager on everything and then the next I was told to “figure it out” and then if something went awry, they’d then say “WHY DIDNT YOU ASK ME?” These managers are hypocrites and racist. Most shockingly, you will be ostracized if you have darker skin. There is no one on the architecture teams with dark skin. In performance acceleration, being told to speak up in meetings was encouraged, but I later found out from my own manager, that he hated when people shared their opinions in meetings. You know…if a leader asks for feedback or opinions in a meeting….don’t just sit there in silence…..have a conversation about things……question things, riff off each other, inspire each other, be humble in your work……no culture of bringing each other up ….the managers just wanted to make themselves look good all the time. If you are offered a position in either the factory or studio architect / architecture departments…. One do not take it, there is a toxic work culture of sarcasm, distrust, and working 24/7. Two, do not trust a single coworker, especially your managers. There are certain people who will try to destroy you, make you look bad at every step, and manipulate the situation to their advantage. Everyone seemed to hate each other in this department. Do not chat in any larger group chats, just do your work each day and leave.

Fast Paced Environment in Software Org, Fun for Early Career

      Staff software integration engineer
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Good for early career push for fast learning. Can be quite fast, expect to drink from the firehouse while learning from some of the best engineers around.

      Cons

Sometimes pace can be too fast, resulting in unclear split of work efforts, or inability to learn quickly and churn out features based on necessity for launching products. Need to police your mental well-being yourself, no one will do it for you, although middle management is usually supportive once you've put in a few years of the grind.

      Pros

--There were biannual performance cycles required by management which provided more opportunities for consideration of pay increases or promotions. --Began quarterly nominations for promotion consideration.

      Cons

--Not all employees are respectful and there was little repercussion for those that didn't meet Tesla's "anti-jerk" policy...despite it being within employee handbook --Managers were not utilizing standardized rubrics for performance reviews. Lots of instances of favoritism leading to promotions or consideration of new roles when applying internally --Expectation to overload work on all personnel --Elon

      Pros

      Cons

      Middle of the pack

      Service technician
      Former employee
      Marlborough, MA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

-good benefits -can work from home depending on department -middle management is very understanding of family life and do facilitate a balance

      Cons

-upper management is disconnected with reality, and flip flop on the whims -bad employees and ones who lack important skills are accommodated, leaving those who are more skilled to pick up slack with no benefit from it -you get stuck in your position, regardless how good you are/how hard you've worked, favoritism is very real and clear -pay is lower to at best average, unless you have been working there pre-pandemic -upper management is disorganized and decisions that do not make sense fall on deaf's here -safety is only a thing until a job needs to get done one way or another - punishment via middle management not liking you is real -raises only come from promotions that only come when someone leaves the company or department -instead of yearly raises you get "cyber wallets" that is allotted amount that can be used for Tesla merch, towards tesla stocks, 2 extra PTO days or can be added to your check in small percentages every 2 weeks; but these allotted amounts are capped because a manager is not allowed to give employees 5 out of 5, and this comes straight from upper management. So you are forever topped out at 3 out 5 stars, which can be anywhere to 3k-4k per 6/7 month period, but this is taxed of course. -Elon has and can fire 20% of workforce, forcing managers to choose random people because when you have a good department that is efficient it does not matter

      Pros

Company is leading at least for the past several years

      Cons

Chaotic management which makes pressure sometimes unnecessarily high, micromanagement is very common and again a lot of times unnecessary and only slows down the process without providing much contribution...
