Pros
During early COVID-19, I was laid off- company went out of business during COVID-19 shutdown. LA Angels turnaround from the day I put I the application, to when they called me for phone interview within 2 days and was hired a week later. Pro Sports environment can be exciting. Worked other events during baseball opportunities such as Supercross, Car shows, Monster Jam Coworkers are nice Just before I left they did bump up my pay a bit due to Union.
Cons
Very few opportunities to Advanced Also very weird— I applied to be a Parking Cashier, couple days before the interview they mentioned they were also looking to fill other roles such as Customer Service or other roles that offered a few more hours a week. When I showed up to the interview they were like ‘Oh by the way, we the Angels have decided to try something new this year: interview 5 people at once due to COVID and indoor space limitations. Which was weird and threw me off. I was so confused they pointed at me in front of the other workers- and said introduce yourself and tell us your work history. Technology and softwares were outdated and ticket scanner/App would die or glitch frequently. They did however announce that they would be upgrading it shortly before I left They send you a work shift calendar for the upcoming month. The bad thing is there is a Start time but no end time… some days you will work 4hrs and the next day 10 hours, then 6 hours the next time, then back to 4hrs and 4hrs and 5hrs and sometimes I had to take 2 lunches and they wouldn’t be able to give you an estimate. Some days I would start at 8am next day it was 4pm the day after it can be 12pm and day after 4pm, then the following shift can be 2PM Very unpredictable Couple times I was one of the few that showed up to my shift, one night few days before Xmas it was raining and 80% of coworkers called out last minute- the office met because so little people showed up to their shifts they said they were going to “force” some of the office people to assist. The office people, said they wouldn’t really be able to do that (Selling tickets-easy)One guy did come out to help, he asked to use my umbrella as he was not prepared 20 mins later he came up to me while Drenched handed back the umbrella and said ‘I’m not really dressed for this, this is not in my job title description when I got hired’ and left. I was often the youngest worker, so I was thrown off when these Old Timers would give you long speeches on how younger workers ain’t as loyal or motivated as they are. The Angels were not able to take cash for a while due to COVID and Fans would get upset as the website stated it would take cash and they would often try to pushback and suddenly get political In my short time 1yr - I noticed 3 longtime managers 10+ years QUIT mid season (just my Department) and on their final days they would really talk bad on upper management I kept applying to Full Time positions but they never got back to me. Then I applied to a full time role, I believe they received a call from my future employer (Employment Verification) and then they asked if I was inter In a different position that they were expecting to open up some positions couple months for sure. But when I followed up—- they were a bit confused- like we told you that ? A lot of call outs- I was on their ‘On Call’ list for last minute shift substitutions, so you can get extra hours, but very inconvenient as it it literally last minute No Benefits. Part time hours can Average from 15hrs to 30 if you get lucky. It seems like a lot of their Front Office staff are people who have been there for a while and will probably stay just because it’s easy and can get away with lower quality of work. They remind me of USPS/DMV workers- decent paying job but never promoted but easy peasy job— few opportunities of Advancement on the office and Event side as well. Coworkers most are entry level or Retirement people. I noticed a couple younger workers and “retirement age” workers would take an Uber from and to work some 20 30 miles away and would break even or lose money each month due to the low pays and hours. & when I would ask they them why they would do that they would say I don’t know or say “it’s just something to keep my busy,” You are around nice people but coworkers have little motivation or ambition to advance within the company or just seek better career opportunities elsewhere. There was a longtime Coworker who was offered a better position but he turned it down because he didn’t want more responsibilities or work. Another coworker a different month I found them in a corner during their break by vending machine. They were sweating heavy and looked like something was wrong. I asked are you Okay and they wiped their forehead and were like “Yeah, everything is Okay. Wooo I dodged a bullet- they were trying to have me do more stuff for more pay, and I am not looking for more work or better pay 0 vacation days. They gave me 3 sick days. I called them 3 weeks ahead and told them I needed to do my 1st Covid Shot, luckily the 2nd booster shot was scheduled on an off day…they said I would need to use a Sick Day and ask for a doctor note. I used my first and only sick day and they asked for the doctors note and I gave it to them. 2 days later they pulled me to the office and the were trying to have me sign a paper that gave me a First Strike- Warning for missing my shift and i said I gave you the doctors note and you said to use a sick day and they gave me a speech about how it was important to be responsible and make sure that I show up to all my shifts and how all my shifts we’re my responsibility and that the 3 sick days is something Federal that they are forced to give us by law but you would be essentially penalized if you used one- I didn’t sign the paper I told them I had never had a discipline at any company or this company and that I gave notice well ahead and the Manager looked confused and stared at me for like 30 secs and was like hmmm OK you don’t have to sign anything and he crumbled the paper. Which was also weird. I can’t imagine someone with a family who has a real last minute family emergency. Fun Job, but the longer you stay you will lose career ambition.
