Cons
- "Nothing personal, just business". I was American-style fired several months after switching teams. Informed during a regular 1 on 1 call, and 10 minutes later all my work accounts were closed. Got paid for 3 extra weeks as per my contract though, I'll give them that.
Flo usually uses B2B contracts with remote "employees". They do claim that it's just a formality to avoid having too many legal entities in different countries and promise to treat you as a real employee when hiring you. But when somebody wants to get rid of you, they won't hold to that promise and terminate your contract without hesitation.
Before these events, I had successfully worked in another team for a whole year without major issues and got "meets expectations" on my yearly performance review. After a year, I decided to switch teams to work on newer, shinier things. This sounded like a great opportunity. The reality was not so bright though. My new engineering manager fired me at the first chance after nitpicking everything they could find against me.
- Lack of transparency. Just one example: a couple of weeks before I was fired the CEO announced that hiring will now focus on office locations only. It was unexpected to everyone including the talent acquisition team, they heard it just like everybody else at the monthly All-Hands meeting. I've just finished conducting the last interview stage with a candidate and we were ready to send them an offer (which does not happen too often), but after this announcement, we were forced to pass on them because of their location. So, everybody involved in the interviewing process as well as the candidate wasted their time.
- Growing bureaucracy. The company recently formalized requirements of relocation to the UK. The requirements are pretty strict. Which overall may be understandable because of budget limitations. But the company doesn't try to put itself in employees' shoes in any way. If a Flo employee's spouse gets a job offer and another company relocates the family to the UK, Flo employee can't be transferred to the London's office if they do not meet relocation criteria. Even though no relocation support is needed from Flo side, just a hypothetical salary raise due to cost of living. Flo expects such an employee to resign and reapply for the same position, but in London, if that position will be opened there.
