What is the hiring process like at Coles Group?

      Coles Group reviews

Low pay, poorly managed, inefficient processes

      Customer delivery driver

      Business outlook

      Pros

5% discount on groceries Overtime available as understaffed to take on all the deliveries

      Cons

Management/leadership is poor: - disorganised with shift allocations due to slow hiring process 7+ weeks for a driving role, low retention. Often rushing to fill routes at last minute (literally) - do not provide consistent uniform to everyone, some get a waterproof/windproof jacket valued at $50 while others get a $25 fleece top. If you want the other you need to pay for it yourself. - do not provide branded headwear such as cap and/or beanie but expect you to go into the elements (sun and rain) to do their door to door deliveries. Was told we had to buy them ourselves (for $6) or provide our own. - had to beg for wet weather coveralls/pants - have not had a proactive meeting with manager to see how things are going - processes are communicated in MS Teams which is also the group where drivers post issues with their vans and routes, so processes get lost - don't give drivers a Coles email account and use driver's personal email for communication - training is poor and inadequate ... spent 3 days doing irrelevant online training just so that box can be ticked ... didn't once do training on the mobile device we use to manage our deliveries - shifts changed at late notice without letting the driver know - expect to come in early to review route but clock on when going to yard - expect to leave 30 mins before documented departure time and sit in the van for 30 mins close to the 1st delivery so management can boast a 100% departure KPI (need to pass through a magical geofence rather than use the van's actual exit time) - formal processes are non-existent except a 1 liner here and there in MS Teams - drivers often have to pack the groceries in bags - difficult to find parking in inner city suburbs - customers aren't home and drivers have to get approval to leave unattended or cancel with customer care, delaying route - drivers need to fill up the vans on return but there is never any gloves to protect our hands from the carcinogen diesel which is often spilt due the RFID technology employed to track the vehicle's fuel tank - need to do a debrief with a marshal on return of drive but they are never around and we have to wait in the sun (or rain/cold) until they decide to turn up. I'm not sure why marshals get paid more than the drivers. - if you drive efficiently and return earlier, delivering all your deliveries in the customer's requested window, you are rewarded by cleaning windows on all the trucks to fill in time. - some management are slow or don't respond to questions via MS Teams - never see senior management - feedback is not taken into account Keep in mind Coles posted a $1.2B profit this year.

      Pros

Decent pay with casual loading, weekend and holiday bonuses. Pretty easy job with good coworkers

      Cons

Management is not good, you have to deal with terrible customers, clique culture, favouritism and bias from management ~ if your manager doesn’t like you personally no matter if your good at your job, you won’t get many hours. Manager once said “Sorry I mustve forgotten you” when rostered zero hours two weeks in a row and complained about having no hours to give casuals despite hiring 7 new casuals two weeks prior.

      Pros

      the company will provide uniforms

      Cons

This store constantly advertises for team members in every department except checkouts. Once hired, after a couple of months, you are told you're going to work checkout or will be fired. The store does not keep staff in the position they applied for, even if they are fantastic at it. Then the Manager has the audacity to say staff leave because the work's too hard for them. That is a blatant lie! Staff leave because they are misled at interview and then fired for declining a position they didn't apply for. I think this is the way this Store Manager is trying to manipulate Head Office into removing all the manned checkouts to make it self service only. This store really needs a new Store manager before this one runs out of people in town to hire and fire.

      Pros

Great flexibility - no mandated days in the office. Pay can be really good depending on which team/role you're in. Lots of free things in the office.

      Cons

Pay is very much an issue across the business - no transparency with pay range/roles. Grads are rolling off at over $100k whereas some people in full-time position with years of experience are well below that range. Incredibly long and poor recruitment process. They call every employer you've worked with for the past x number of years and the people making those calls were quite disrespectful to my previous employers. Office space needs upgrading. It's quite an old office and we need more desk space to fit everyone in the office. How do we not have communal plates and mugs?
