Pros

Manchester office is centrally located One of the best hourly rates of all language schools in the area

Cons

Staff are all employed on zero hours contracts, so there's no stability at work. One week you get asked to teach more than 30hours, the next there may not be work at all. They have their own custom-made materials, but unfortunately these are of poor quality and quite difficult to teach from. The books are full of spelling and grammatical errors and the topics and language points are arranged in a very haphazard, confusing way, so lots of extra work is needed to create useful lessons based on these materials.

Thank you for taking the time to provide the feedback in your Glassdoor employee review. As Chief Operating Officer for Kaplan International English (KIE), I hope to build a company culture in which honest feedback, no matter how difficult it is to hear, is both respected and encouraged. I believe that listening to staff feedback in all its forms - criticism, concerns, praise - will be critical to addressing the challenges we face as an organization. Your post will help us in our commitment to make changes and improvements to the culture, direction, and results of the company. You touch on the nature of our teacher contracts and the difficulty of managing school staffing levels to match the peaks and troughs of our student enrollments. You are correct that our model does employ part-time teachers to address this challenge. At the same time, we also have full-time teaching roles at nearly every school where the enrollment volume will permit it. Many of our teaching staff appreciate the flexibility offered by the part-time positions, but this role is, of course, not for everyone. Given the reality of the KIE flexible-length course model, we will always need to have a mix of part and full-time teachers. It is important, however, that we set expectations correctly for our part-time instructors to avoid any misconceptions about the nature of that role. The materials we use in the classroom, called K+ Notes, are indeed custom-made, and they are both created and edited on an ongoing basis with the input of our team of qualified ESL teachers. I am sorry to hear that you found it difficult to teach from them. Our books are based on performance objectives established by the Common European Framework of Reference, which is the most widely recognized ESL framework in the world, and the result of many decades of research in ESL. We are also subject to regular review by our accreditors in all regions who are experts in the ESL field. These include ACCET in the US, the British Council and ISI in the UK, and ASQA Australia and NZQA in New Zealand. As far as spelling and grammatical errors, we use a professional copy editor as well as an internally-developed a system which allows teachers to provide quick feedback to our academic team in order to get digital files instantly updated. Of course, we can certainly do more to ensure that our teachers, especially those that are part-time or temporary, receive improved training in using the K+ materials effectively. I have shared your concerns with the operational directors for all KIE regions and asked them to look into how we might do this. While I respect the anonymous nature of Glassdoor, please know that I would be happy to speak with you in person about any aspect of your post if you are comfortable with such a conversation. Thank you again for the feedback. Sincerely, Dave (C.O.O.)

Pros

You're coming into an established system, so it's good for new teachers who are still learning who they are in the classroom.

Cons

The company sometimes lets bad student behavior slide because the pockets behind those students run deep. Also, that established system can feel repetitive unless you're bringing in a lot of outside enrichment, but they don't like paying for continued prep time.
