JOB DESCRIPTION:

HR Project Partners is currently accepting resumes for a Process Controls Engineer on behalf of our client, Equinox Gold, Valentine Gold Mine. The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation or a related field, Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or equivalent is preferred and a minimum of 5-8 years of experience with ABB control systems, preferably in the mining or mineral processing industry.

The Process Controls Engineer will lead the design, programming, commissioning, and startup of ABB-based control systems for gold mining operations, with a focus on the milling process. This role plays a critical part in ensuring seamless integration of automation systems during the commissioning and startup phases and ongoing support to optimize plant performance. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable plant operations.

This position is located at the Mine site, working on a 14 days in/14 days out rotation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Process Control System Design and Implementation:

• Design, program, and configure ABB control systems, including System 800xA, AC800M controllers, and PLCs for milling and downstream processes.
• Develop and implement automation strategies to optimize the milling process.
• Ensure ABB systems are configured for high reliability and user-friendliness for operators.
• Collaborate with metallurgists and operations staff to identify control requirements and solutions.

Commissioning and Startup:

• Lead commissioning and startup activities for the milling circuit, including crushers, SAG mills, ball mills, and classification systems.
• Test and calibrate process instrumentation, control loops, and ABB system configurations to meet operational specifications.
• Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during commissioning and startup to ensure smooth ramp-up.
• Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and site personnel to achieve project milestones.

Process Optimization:

• Monitor and analyze performance data from the mill and other plant areas to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Implement advanced control strategies to enhance milling efficiency and throughput.
• Support metallurgists and operations teams in achieving targeted recovery rates and production goals.

System Maintenance and Reliability:

• Perform routine inspections and maintenance of ABB control systems to ensure continuous plant operation.
• Diagnose and resolve system faults, alarms, and communication issues.
• Maintain backups and disaster recovery procedures for ABB hardware and software.

Documentation and Compliance:

• Create and maintain detailed documentation for control system configurations, commissioning activities, and process optimization efforts.
• Ensure all systems comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
• Develop and implement safety instrumented systems where required.

Training and Support:

• Provide hands-on training and technical support to operations and maintenance personnel on ABB systems and control strategies.
• Serve as a resource for process troubleshooting during both commissioning and routine operations.

Project Management:

• Lead or support automation and controls projects, ensuring timely and on-budget delivery.
• Work closely with engineering, procurement, and construction teams during the design and installation phases.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation or a related field.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or equivalent is preferred.
• Minimum 5-8 years of experience with ABB control systems, preferably in the mining or mineral processing industry.
• Proven experience in mill commissioning and startup in the gold ming industry.
• Experience working in a remote industrial environment will be considered an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ATTRIBUTES:

• Proficiency in ABB System and related programming tools.
• Expertise in commissioning and optimizing milling circuits, including crushers, mills, and classification systems.
• Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols.
• Knowledge of process instrumentation, control loops, and advanced automation strategies.
• Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
• Excellent communication, leadership, time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in remote or challenging environments.
• Familiarity with health, safety, and environmental standards in mining operations.
• Familiar with the safe work practices and standard operating procedures of a process plant.
• Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements at remote sites.
• Knowledge of the OHS, mining, and construction regulations.
• A valid driver license and a driver’s abstract.
