Write code to multiply two numbers without using the multiplication sign.

4*3 = 4+4+4 , that would be a simple for loop. Did you say it was for a Software Engineering position? Did you expect them not to ask you coding questions?. I would not even make you an offer if you couldn't solve such a simple problem... I'm surprised they made you an offer.
