I was able to say a bit about queries, specific joins, table structure, indexing etc which seemed to satisfy what they wanted.

Ask them to be explicit about what PHP framework they are using because you will not be making a transition into a safe environment if you need to cross train. I would advise against joining Wren as a PHP developer at their Manchester office if this would require leaving a stable job, moving house or if you don't have strong Symfony5 knowledge, i.e. if you have any reason to be risk averse. They don't go specifically looking for symfony5 people because for the salary they pay they will never find their exact requirements (they under offered by 25%) however once you are in the job you will not survive the first week unless you can hit the ground running with symfony5. It is not enough to know Laravel and expect to cross train. You will be going into an old monolithic Symfony MVC project with all the complexity that comes with an old enterprise level project. Unless you have strong symfony5 knowledge you will not be able to see the wood for the trees and if you ask for time to learn they will explain that the new Manchester office is only supported remotely from Baron-on-Humber and they cannot accommodate anyone who might need help or time to learn. If you do need to ask questions it will be met with irritation (the IT manager has a short fuse and doesn't communicate clearly either) and you will rapidly accrue black marks against your name and be unlikely to last beyond the end of the first week, i.e. if you are looking for a supportive environment with strong leadership this is not the place for you. If you are unemployed and it is your only option then maybe give it a go but if you have something to lose, i.e. you are trading in a steady job or would need to move home, then avoid it. My comment is carefully considered, truthful and hopefully helpful. Wren asks people to write reviews shortly after joining the company when they can trace who has written the review, hence there are a lot of fake gushing 5 star reviews. As we all know, it is human nature to either complain about something or say nothing, the truth is in the 1 star reviews.
