What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?

POP3 is a mail retrieval protocol, generally used for a client to connect to a server, retrieve its messages, and delete them from the server and store them locally. IMAP is designed more as a remote mailbox management protocol, allowing more advanced mail management features such as folders and multiple users/points of access.
