Position Summary

The Operations Manager, Oats is responsible for a safe and healthy work environment and leads a team responsible for all oat mill physical assets. This position supports a team at Regina and Rowatt responsible for the safety and quality of Avena’s food products and ensures Avena provides outstanding service to customers throughout the production planning and manufacturing process.

Key Responsibilities

1. Model and ensure universal adherence to corporate health and safety policies, environmental standards and regulatory requirements. Achieve targets for reactive and proactive safety-related Key Performance Indicators.

2. Support the oat procurement team at both locations to ensure optimum procurement and production planning.

3. Ensure excellent coordination with logistics team for outgoing products, warehouse inventory planning and allocation to sales orders, and Hold and Release procedures.

4. Support Maintenance Manager to ensure processing equipment is well maintained and production is scheduled to allow for predictive and preventative maintenance.

5. Working with sales team members, develop and maintain excellent business relationships with current and potential customers for all oat products. Develop a thorough understanding of individual customer needs and requirements and accurately capture and maintain customer information in Avena systems.

6. Ensure all key processes are well documented, conform with best practices and are followed by operations staff.

7. Ensure physical facilities are clean, efficient and well-maintained.

8. Approve facility improvements within scope of authority and recommend major capital investments supported by a positive business case. Lead assigned capital investment projects.

9. Propose and manage operating and capital budgets within job scope to help meet or exceed budget targets.

10. Capture and maintain in Avena systems thorough and accurate information on operations and communications with and issues affecting growers and customers.

11. Analyze and report on costs for finished product, labour efficiency and yield.

12. Support the FSQMS team with regulatory and customer audits

13. Manage Human Resource issues on own team including staff scheduling and allocation to projects; following all corporate HR policies and processes; recruitment; professional development; training and coaching; managing staff performance (including documenting and dealing promptly with performance deficiencies); succession planning; and creating a positive and high-performance team culture.

14. Working with all relevant colleagues and external collaborators, support product innovation by conducting product testing in house and with customers.

15. Provide production and inventory forecasts and other requested information for operations and budgeting purposes. Develop and report on Key Performance Indicators to measure progress against operations goals.
