Hospitalist Job Description

What is a Hospitalist?

A Hospitalist will perform a variety of procedures in a rural hospital setting. These procedures will be planned and some will be emergency in nature. You will use your wide knowledge base of medical care to provide top notch care to a variety of cases that arrive in this rural hospital setting including standing for long periods of time and tapping into your excellent analytical skills to make the best decisions with limited advance notice.

The ideal candidate will be a physician with 5+ years of experience practicing medicine in a rural hospital setting and true passion for working with the rural population. A valid U.S. medical license and active DEA registration are required, Board Certification as a Hospitalist is preferred.

Responsibilities for Hospitalist

  • Complete daily Rotations
  • Conduct Grand Rounds
  • Mentor Medical Students
  • Supervise Nursing Staff
  • Accept care of critical patients from outside Emergency Personnel brought in via ambulance
  • Diagnose patients and develop treatment plans
  • Order diagnostic tests from other medical providers
  • Accurately Chart patient symptoms and behavior

Qualifications for Hospitalist

  • Board Certified Hospitalist, preferred
  • Active DEA registration
  • 2+ years of experience practicing medicine in a rural hospital setting
  • Passion to practice medicine in a rural hospital setting
  • Completion of continuing education in practicing rural medicine
  • Excellent bedside manner
  • Willingness to live within 35 miles of hospital
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and have limited periods of rest
  • Willingness to be on call for 3+ days in a row with minimal rest
