Becoming a flight attendant is a great way of providing a reliable income for your family. Salaries for flight attendants are very good and are growing at a steady rate. Salaries are the highest in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. You can also make more money as a flight attendant by working for a large airline company within urban areas or large city centers. Having years of experience as a flight attendant will also gain you a higher salary.
The extreme majority of flight attendants in Canada are unionized, and therefore earn money based on a combination of years of service and earning very specific skills, per their labour contract. Generally, union roles will pay more for bilingualism in English and French or advanced safety training in CPR and first aid. In these settings, your pay will increase with every year spent on the job. Outside of unionized positions with one of Canada’s major airlines, flight attendants might be able to find work on private jets for celebrities or athletes. These lucrative and rewarding positions can be extremely few and far-between, so consider yourself very lucky if you manage to find one. Generally speaking, you can earn more by working on long-haul commercial flights, working for larger airlines, or taking on senior cabin crew or supervisory positions on your in-flight team.
If you work for one of Canada’s major airlines, your position is unionized and you therefore won’t be able to negotiate a higher salary. You can still earn slightly more by becoming bilingual in English and French or earning advanced safety credentials, so make sure your employer knows this. Some airlines may even pay more if you learn a third language spoken in one of your airline’s international destinations in Asia, Europe, Africa, or South America, so if you’re proficient enough, add this to your negotiations. If you’re willing to work longer hours or on more long-haul flights, make this known to your employer, as it can often increase your pay. You can also try to negotiate a promotion to a more senior or supervisory role, assuming you have the requisite years of experience. There’s no substitute for time on the job, and most airlines will pay more to flight attendants with great colleague and customer satisfaction ratings who’ve been on the job long enough.
About 72.13% of Flight Attendant professionals feel satisfied with their salary, according to anonymous Glassdoor ratings. An additional $0 in potential pay per year, among other factors, can qualify the annual pay of a Flight Attendant in Canada as a good salary.
