I have been working at autoTRADER.ca full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

autoTRADER is a dynamic environment with huge opportunity for personal and career growth. autoTRADER invests in their people. The training is ongoing, and I have learned and refined many skills over the past 3 years. They also recognize people for their commitment and hard work. Promotions are constantly happening and there are always new mid to senior level management opportunities internally and externally... with the sales team. autoTRADER has sales and product development offices across the country. I have seen many people that want to move for personal reasons keep their career and transition to another region within the organization. The culture is awesome! Everyone is ready to support you if you ask for it and there are lots of employee appreciation events both on and off site. I’ve worked for many domestic and international corporations, and autoTRADER has done wonders for my career.

    Cons

Some locations are better than other but depends what you’re into. A bit of travel involved for senior leaders given we are across Canada.

I have been working at autoTRADER.ca full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good people to work with at the ground level.

    Cons

Management is constantly disrespectful to employees. HR has does nothing about people being yelled and screamed at by certain managers over issues caused by management. Was great with good pay and benefits as well as managers who listened to concerns when it was owned by YPG. Not that way anymore. The low level employees are forced to endure many job related costs saying that the company is trying to tighten... it's belt, while management throws parties with $10,000 prizes. This is one of those 1%er companies you often hear about.

    Pros

The people below management doing the actual work are intelligent and thoughtful. Free underground parking.

    Cons

Toxic baby boomer office culture built around fear. "That's how it's always been" or "You get used to it" is what you hear when you express concerns to fellow coworkers about the toxic workplace environment. Read that again. The long time employees have accepted the mental abuse and toxicity within this company. Don't let yourself suffer like that. Unnecessary amounts of stress because of indefensibly grotty... management. They will tell you they follow agile methodologies, but it's clear they have no idea what agile is. They aren't interested in good user experience, only conversation optimization. Micro-management is far too high, which demonstrates a serious lack of faith in the teams from upper management. By the time they realize that they're dying it will be far too late to save this brand. If you're reading these reviews because you're thinking of working here, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere. Take a look at the other reviews on this page, specifically the ones where the company has replied to a review. Even in their replies to negative reviews they're disingenuous. Finger pointing and shifting blame is the status quo for this company.

    Advice to Management

Discipline managers - Just because your schedule is crammed with meetings and work does not mean you should force more work onto your team. Any time we brought up concerns about not having enough time to do the work the go to answer was "well I'm always busy and make time for this, so you should too". Maybe you're unfamiliar with the agile process, but you don't throw extra work into the cycle/sprint just because... you can. To the managers that are saying their team is able to complete all the work and the additional stories you add in mid-sprint, that's because you have mentally abused your team to the point that they will bend over and sacrifice their work life balance to appease your horrid management habits. Executives - You are all dinosaurs in the tech industry. You don't understand half the buzzwords you use, and your faith in the teams below you is so low that it's pathetic to call you anything synonymous to a manager or executive. I strongly suggest you give management and executives mandatory agile training with something akin to a test at the end. It's quite obvious that the vast majority of people in these positions do not understand what agile actually is and only see it as a synonym for "fast work". They've told you they know agile, but it's quite clear they do not. You need to weed out the managers and executives that are mentally abusive and toxic. You actually have very talented and thoughtful employees across most disciplines at the company. However, you will never get them to stick around with the current management tactics in play. When the company folds, because it will at the rate it's going, you'll be wondering what happened. I hope you come back and read these reviews to see just how dense your decisions were.

    Pros

    Previously a great Canadian brand

    Cons

The place is a gong show. Senior Leadership is untrustworthy, evil, and self serving The amount of consistent job postings should be a red flag. The place is a slaughter house

    Advice to Management

Please move on and hand the keys to the organization to someone who cares about people and culture and not just their bonuses. Do it for the Brand and stop thinking about yourselves

I have been working at autoTRADER.ca

    Pros

Non union employees are paid decent wages.

    Cons

People "disappear" all the time and HR comes to clean up their desks. There is no transparency even tho management claims to be "transparent" . Product team is all made up of sales and marketing people who can only build integrations with third-party companies . Company does not invest in education and retention at all.

    Advice to Management

When you make people disappear, address it head on with a company wide announcement. In absence of information - fear rules. Everyone around me is on linkedin daily looking for backup jobs instead of working .

I worked at autoTRADER.ca full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The place started off great. Room for growth, fun projects.... But then... There are some perks however. Free parking. Free breakfast and snacks (although lots of pressure by management to remove these) Dogs used to be allowed but no longer. Maybe they will return once certain people leave the office. There is a pool table!

    Cons

New CDO arrived in the Burnaby office. Claimed that "if you don't like my management style, then there's the door." Immediately dozens of people left for a place with less finger pointing, stress, and false promises.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the CDO in Burnaby and start treating your employees like human beings. Stop worshiping sales. The company produces software products that need to be world class. Unfortunately the company is sales oriented: autoTRADER is not a sales company! You don't sell "sales" you sell software products. Too late anyways, Car Gurus is coming for your jobs.

    Pros

Some good people and teams Pay is average for company size.

    Cons

Toxic culture Don’t care about people. People are only there to work until they are no longer seen as useful or exhausted and quit on their own. You are only just a worker not a person. There is no consideration for people. Expectations are always to do more, get more done without recognizing limited resources. Not doing everything is called out as ineffective rather than not having a clear strategy. Management... not very smart. Lots of talking down. Won’t learn anything High turnover.
