Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

      Pros

-Free Food -Good salary -great product (aesthetically) -Wear what you want -Fun atmosphere (For the most part) -Lots of opportunities to learn -Great first sales job or out of college

      Cons

EVERYTHING ELSE -Expected long hours -have to cheat the system or stay in grey area to hit quota/goals -shady ethically in upper management -upper management is a joke. Lack respect, honor, integrity, caring & most importantly aren't real men or women. Just un-honorable pompous hipsters -Terrible sales cycle/implementation -promised certain things, not even close. A true bait & switch recruiting style -Product is always glitching, down, or broken. -ZERO customer support & the little they do get are from reps that don't know what they're talking about -150% call center mentality & cold calling -DO NOT come here from another respectful sales career with a Fortune 500 company. This place is a joke & will take you backwards in your sales career. They claim to hire "experience sales professionals with proven track records" only to tell you to stop using those strategies that worked for you in the past & to "read the script" Its all script here. No rapport, relationship building or "salesman-ship" You are a human robot.

      SMB Account Executive

Mar. 1, 2015 - SMB Account Executive in Scottsdale, AZ
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Good compensation, incentives - Fully stocked fridge and snacks (good kind as well) - Ability to wear whatever you wanted to work - New office building (Scottsdale) in the summer - "Free" software platform for companies to utilize - Mac Air provided and a younger employees

      Cons

      - Felt as if the recruiter did not give a full picture of what the job entailed - A lot of insurance knowledge is needed, and very specific questions will be asked by companies. There is a very steep learning curve if you do not know anything about insurance - During the interview process, I was told that it was as simple as signing up a company to use Zenefits and you get commission on each "life". However, commission is only paid for those employees that sign up and use insurance for whatever company you are selling - Long hours (minimum 10 hours) - although they do tell you before you begin - When I was recruited I was told there would be no territories whatsoever, but than was assigned certain states to work with - Many of the sales managers only had 3 months experience as an Account Executive before becoming a manager

      Overworked & Underpaid!!! (Operations)

Nov. 4, 2014 - Operations in San Francisco, CA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Never a dull moment - Learning is hands-on and in a fast paced environment - Radical transparency and feedback from upper management - Great co-workers who are willing to help out and get the job done (we're all in this together attitude)

      Cons

      - Minimal pay compared to work expectations - LONG hours, team meetings not started until 5:45pm sometimes 6:00pm - Horrible company culture, no team building or fun activities event though we work a minimum of 10 hours/day This review is NOT for sales positions, life is great in almost every other department If you are considering a position in Operations (carrier ops, member ops, support, or implementation) you need to make sure to negotiate your salary otherwise you will be stuck working 10-14 hours/day for nothing.

Sales Long hours- No Work life Balance

      Jun. 8, 2015 - Anonymous Employee
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The people are great. Office is great, nice location and everything is brand new. Fully stocked kitchen which is nice since you won't want to / be able to go out for lunch on some days since you will be so busy.

      Cons

Long hours - zero work life balance. 10-12 hour days are expected. Not enough training to be able to speak with clients intelligently. Unfortunately everyone is new to the company so no one can help you when you have questions. Google is your best friend. Decent benefits but not what you would expect from a benefits company. No 401k. Pay is not competitive for the market or industry. No consistency...things change every day. Just when you think you learned something it changes.

NIGHTMARE & DISASTER in Operations & Implementation

Dec. 21, 2014 - Implementation Manager in Phoenix, AZ
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Friendly Coworker. - Free snacks.

      Cons

      - Do you have a family? A life? A dog? FORGET ABOUT THEM at Zenefits! You will be required to work EXTREME long hours MORE than 10+ hours/day with many people working even longer + weekends as well. This makes your base salary around or below minimum wage. (Stories of people working from 7AM till 2AM are shared around the company as success stories of great role models) - Product & Platform is not very advanced but is broken in SO many areas both client side and backend. - TONS of redundant internal processes which overlaps and slows things down. - Sales are forced to sugarcoat & lie about the product to SELL, then Implementation/Operation is left with the headache of brining clients back to reality. - Hidden and convoluted bonus structure (no one in Operations has been paid bonus yet). - 'Managers' in the company are just people how have been there the longest (which is around 10 months), many are fresh out of college with NO managerial experience. - No team building or 'fun' even when we work LONG hours. - HORRIBLE benefits, for a benefits company: They don't have a 401(k), yes you read that right, FORGET about retiring. + They ONLY cover 70% of your medical, dental & vision.

      Once in a Career Opportunity

      Jan. 26, 2015 -
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Truly disruptive product - don't just read about it, be part of it - Unlimited industry potential - ANY company in the US can use Zenefits - Prospects love the product - super intuitive, simple to use, easy to implement, even easier to demo - We are solving a real problem in a real, old school market and customers need our help - Great OTE, uncapped commission, tons of leads, tons of market interest, great press on the product/company - Excellent investors, executives and management - Zenefits has a vision: to be full service HR and Benefits platform for any company to use - real long term potential - Because the company is growing so fast, if you perform you can get promoted much faster than any other start up out there - If you can be successful here, at one of the fastest growing SaaS companies ever, you will be able to carry that for your entire career - once in a career opportunity!

      Cons

      - Like any start up you could work long hours. Especially EOM, who knows you might even have to skip lunch to close a deal now and then.

      Pros

      - You get to work with motivated, brilliant people. - Hottest start-up of 2014 -Forbes. - Awesome product, shaking up an entire industry. Utah tried to shut Zenefits down, simply because our software is unfair to the other brokers in the state. Sounds silly, doesn't it? - Full stocked kitchen w/ veggies, fruit, any drink you could ever ask for, all kinds of healthy snacks. Oh and beer on tap :) - Casual attire. Dress up, dress down, whatever you like. - Hearing success stories of small-businesses is very rewarding. It's nice to know consumers of Zenefits truly do love what they get from the software. - If you work till after 7pm you get free dinner delivered. - Equity given with offer letter. - CEO gives transparency into everything by holding all hands meetings every few weeks. Constant motivation!

      Cons

      - Only real dock is company is that currently the SF office is split up into 3 spaces within the building. This is just growing pain though, we'll all be back together soon enough! - Sometimes long hours, but that's part of the gig!!

Fast-paced and exciting place to work

Nov. 2, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in San Francisco, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Wonderful coworkers! Everyone here is hard working, motivated, genuine, intelligent, and willing to help. Plus, the leadership is great. - We are creating a very exciting and revolutionary technology that truly impacts small businesses in a positive way. Having a real impact on people is very rewarding and makes work fun. - The office has great perks. Food, beverages, games, etc. Very nice additions! Also, the office is located is a great location in SoMa. - It seems like employees are excited to be here and be part of something amazing. - LOVE the fast-paced environment where change can happen quickly. This is great because it makes us extremely dynamic and agile. In summary, I have been with this company for nearly 2 years now through ups and downs. I wouldn't change it for anything. Zenefits is a great place to work and has provided me opportunities to advance my career. My coworkers are part of what make this such a great place to work.

      Cons

      - Long hours during busy times. (But that is going to happen at any company)

Huge Promise but Fell Tragically Flat

Feb. 10, 2017 - Analyst in San Francisco, CA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Great sense of purpose and a noble cause (theoretically at least). - Overall, the people were great.

      Cons

      - Leadership is inconsistent and made game-changing decisions seemingly without due diligence or a solid understanding of the likely impacts. - The pay and perks didn't justify the long hours and the terrible work/life balance. - High internal turnover meant that you were always scrambling to plug a gap or take up someone else's work that was just left hanging. - Morale is very low for largely avoidable reasons. - I have very little confidence that the recent layoffs and change in direction were made in the best interests of clients, employees, or even the company as a whole. The whole thing smacks of a "cash out for whatever we can" mentality. This is at the expense of years of hard work (I'm taking 14 hour days) by hundreds of people. Just a pretty sorry spectacle overall.

      Zenefits Response

      CPO

Thanks for the feedback. As difficult as the February layoff was, it created years of runway during which we can build out or all-in-one HR platform, expand our ecosystem, improve our go-to-market, and increase our operational efficiency. We have a new CEO, Jay Fulcher, with deep experience as a CEO in HCM.
