    Negative Outlook

I worked at York University for more than 5 years

    Pros

Many good students keen to be challenged and want to learn.

    Cons

This is a university where 50% of the undergraduate courses are taught by contract faculty who are out of a job at the end of their contract, and who are treated as second class citizens by their privileged tenured colleagues, who usually conduct little research and teach the same things year in and year out. There are labour strikes every few years because workers are not treated well, morale is always low, and students ultimately pay the price. Whatever you do, don't go to York, and don't send your kids to study there.

I have been working at York University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible work hours, competitive wage for part time work with a fun at atmosphere

    Cons

Slow implementation of new systems, regular strikes making campus a potentially volatile place.

I worked at York University for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits. One prof I worked for was super understanding about things, and one was super hard line. Really depends on the prof. When you get your TAship offer, meet with the prof to get a feel for them. You don't necessarily have to accept the first prof you're assigned to.

    Cons

Constant strikes, administrative nonsense at every level and in every faculty and department

  8. "Typical University"

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at York University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pretty leisurely, not too much pressure. Everyone is friendly.

    Cons

Very slow moving, especially if there's a strike..

I worked at York University full-time

    Pros

If you enjoy processes and procedures, could be a good match.

    Cons

Processes can neglect exceptions, and can be difficult to navigate institutional bureaucracy given the size and scope of the organization. Surprising reliance on paper-based transactions. Unions are generally seen to be positive force for workers, but at this organization, strikes are all too common, which does not serve the best interest of students interested in quality education.

I worked at York University part-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule, great team and leadership in the department. Teaching overall was a very rewarding experience. The people in the department are the only reason I'm not giving 1 star in this review.

    Cons

York University's top-level managers are awful. Had a strike that lasted nearly 5 months WITHOUT PAY! They treated us like animals. I will never let my children get their education here because of the regular strike interruptions (first hand experience as both a student in 2015 and as an educator 2018). Nor will I ever apply for a tenure track position here.
