I worked at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of my co-workers were great, the hours were reasonable, there were lots of good discounts. Pay was decent depending on the store location.

    Cons

Terrible corporate management. Instead of properly training and guiding store managers in the right direction, corporate would just give new store managers a 'shot', and then fire them when they didn't exceed expectations. Corporate is undoubtedly the reason they are out of business now.

    Advice to Management

    Can't fix stupid

I have been working at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

90% of the employees work there because they love what they are selling. At least at my location everyone genuinely likes each other. The discount are great with lots of opportunities to get even better discounts though vendors.

    Cons

The company is shutting their doors December 28, 2017 due to UFA deciding to sell. More than 500 people will be out of a job.

I have been working at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fun, easy, and a good discount. If you are knowledgeable and use the gear, this is the job for you.

    Cons

The problem with retail is the Wage. Also, some customers can be a real pain, you need to treat them ok even if they are being belligerent and demonstrably incorrect.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people what they are worth, because the knowledge they have and develop working for you is extremely hard to foster.

I worked at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a very supportive atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and your schedules were very fair. They understands when you ask for time off and try to accommodate when able to.

    Cons

Not many challenges. Mostly just making sure there was enough staff trained at Holiday time to assist with the extra flow of customers.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

I have been working at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get a discount but the low wages make most items in the store un-affordable

    Cons

Wildly incompetent management, serious potential employees and hard workers need not apply. Movement upward within the company is dependent on the level of bootlicking and yes man ship instead of experience, hard work or an empirical ability to do a job. Management does not care about employees or their families only their own bottom line.

    Advice to Management

Pull your heads out of your backsides and pay attention to what employees on the front lines have to say. We are the ones handling your customers face to face instead of sitting in a cubicle hundreds of miles away.

    Pros

    -Great staff discount
-Get to work in a unique retail environment specializing in an activity you are passionate about
    -Easy job
    -Lots of amenities nearby

    Cons

-Horrible/ Non existent product replenishment practices. Shelves would sit empty for months. Or items would show up in the seasons when they weren't needed.
-Many of the staff have been there for far too long and are bitter
-Major disconnect between corporate and the sales floor.

    Advice to Management

-Implement modern forecasting and product replenishment practices
-offer better selection of fly fishing flies that are in tune with regional seasonality
-carry more new and innovative products

  10. "Hunting/Fishing/Camping store not a bad place to work"

I have been working at Wholesale Sports and Outdoor Outfitters full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

On the retail side it's a pretty relaxed place with very little micromanagement. In-store staff discount is good and staff can also earn discounts on specific brands through a tool used to enhance product knowledge. It's not a huge company so it's easy to get to know almost everyone there which is nice.

    Cons

The health benefits are not very good (quite costly for what is actually covered). The communication between departments/teams as well as management transparency could be better. Many grumpy people work there, perhaps they are disgruntled or maybe it's the type of business that brings in certain employees?

    Advice to Management

I would suggest better communication/more transparency from management for starters. For trouble areas put policies into place and ensure that everyone is aware of them and adheres to them.

    Pros

Most of the floor staff are very knowledgable and great to work with. Customers are great and share the love of the outdoors.

    Cons

Management has little to no management training and it shows. Head office management has nowhere near the skill and education of the more experienced floor staff when it comes to product knowledge and store needs. They act like bipolar dictators when given suggestions.

Store management (All) is more concerned with making the store look "pretty" than addressing customer requests and needs. It's embarrassing how smart managers think they are. If they'd managed anything more than Lemonade stand previously, I'd be surprised. Don't know how to think outside the box and still make a buck for UFA. So focused on outdated operating procedures that they forget why we're business.... to provide great product and service while making a profit.

The customer is definitely not number one in this company....if the customer only knew the lengths this company goes to NOT get what the customer is wanting they would never come back.

    Advice to Management

UFA needs to sell this company to someone who cares and make this a viable business. Otherwise, the big players (Cabela's, Basspro etc) will erode this company into oblivion. It's already happening, but management is too blind to notice.

Like it or not, this is a product knowledge based business, especially at the upper management level when it comes knowing what to buy. For example, the stores are full of "halfs", ie they carry one part, but not the others that go with it. Or even better, they carry both parts and discontinue one half making the other half useless and call the remaining half a Core item...I'm sure they have no idea what I'm talking about.

To the gun purchaser (whoever you are), Google "Top 10" firearms in each category and BUY them and LOTS of them!!!!

Prediction: WSS will be out of business/taken over within 3 years. Hopefully taken over so we can keep a Canadian presence in the market.

Oh and by the way, you're probably breaking at least half a dozen labour laws on a daily basis.
