      Wear All The Hats

Mar. 9, 2023 - Project Manager in Nashville, TN
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great health and retirement benefits Stable company Plenty of Opportunity Well Known Brand with Plenty of Repeat Customers

      Cons

Base pay is low - does not justify the hours you have to put in unless you can survive long enough to realize long term benefits. Poor workplace morale. Little training for young PMs and field staff As a result of low base pay/poor hiring (my opinion) - quality of staff around me was weak compared to competition You are expected to wear all hats and do whatever it takes for projects to succeed. Precon - business development - HR - project management- accounting - and playing superintendent when field staff is failing. High turnover

Stay Away - Great Benefits but No HR

      Feb. 15, 2023 - Project Engineer
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Benefits. If you stay with WT you will be taken care of. They pay well on mileage and travel. Despite the nepotism there’s some pretty serious opportunity here. Interesting projects and a prestigious reputation.

      Cons

Alarming cultural norms. Locker room banter can quickly become racist and sexist. It’s no surprised there’s no HR and there are rumors of inappropriate conduct from higher level employees. When you start you will get lured in by being made to feel important but quickly you will realize your offer is not your reality. They will offer jobs in major cities and slowly position you 90+ minutes out. If you don’t like your manager you are in a tough spot. They often force people into travel by public announcements. If you are not liked you will be exiled quickly. I highly recommend you try your luck elsewhere. This can be a great place to build a career and wealth but there are too many warnings and too many nefarious characters.

      Great Company For Beginners

Oct. 12, 2022 - Senior Field Engineer in Fort Worth, TX
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

This company is great for starting your career in construction. They allow you to take on responsibilities, run work, and learn from your inevitable failures. The expectations are high and the job hours are long. The benefits are great. Health insurance is no cost if you are single and very cheap for family relatively speaking. 401k with 5% base employer contribution + an additional 50% employer match up to 6% of employee salary (so you contribute 6%, WT contributes 8%). 10 paid vacations to start + 1 per year of service. The long term benefits are far more attractive than the short term with stock appreciation rights, fuel card, vehicle allowance, and profit sharing.

      Cons

Company is very project manager based and it is run that way at all offices with faster career growth and a bigger career ceiling for the office side compared to the field side. No work-life balance. Most days were 11-12hr days for field staff. Trial by fire is typical among field staff "training". Base pay is very low compared to competition even as you get promoted up the ladder. No company vehicles issued. They expect new hires to drive personal vehicles and pay for their own fuel. Typical promotion timeline will have employees receiving fuel cards after 2 years of service. I advise against getting into their "Vandalay" program if they talk about recruiting you for a large data center project.

      Pros

      Great history and job security

      Cons

Hard to move up in the company, it’s political and you have to ride coat tails to progress. They lose people who are some of their best employees for this.

      Cons

      - Whiting-Turner is fairly new to the Midwest. While they have had a lot of growth, they still don’t have a lot of strong client relationships yet in the Midwest - A LOT of hard bids
