I worked at Whiting Petroleum full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Salary, Benefits and decent work/life balance

    Cons

Upper Management - Specifically the new CEO Brad Holly - Are shameless liars who will paint a very pretty picture to keep people from leaving.

    Advice to Management

Stop lying to your employees to boost retention.

Back in April of 2018 there were rampant lay off rumors circulating through Whiting. In our particular group the CFO (Michael Stevens) made a presentation and did everything short of swearing on the Bible that there would be "No more layoffs". Within three weeks of this promise there was a company-wide layoff.

Needless to say Whiting showed it's true character that day and it's pretty ugly under all the shiny gloss of high pay and good benefits. I will steer anybody I can well clear of this company knowing that management has no issue throwing their "valuable employees" under the bus when it suits the bottom line.

I guess the 30+ people that got laid off and had their lives turned upside down helped to pay for that shiny new corporate jet that Brad Holly flies around in. Good to see your real priorities Mr. Holly.

I have been working at Whiting Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Good people

    Cons

Very poor leadership and they don’t care about their employees at all. You uproot your life for them and when people get fired because of stupid reasons. This is turning into a job instead of a career.

    Advice to Management

Star being honest with your employees.

I have been working at Whiting Petroleum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good but have to be in order to stop people from leaving.

    Cons

Terrible managers. Incompetent supervisors in almost all departments. No clear organization or structure in management. The way they do things compared to other oil and gas companies is horrific... they're behind the times and not catching up.

    Advice to Management

CEO and higher ups need to catch up with the times and install a more professional environment.

    Pros

Great place to work with great compensation. The company is taking steps to improve and has slowly improved the entire time that I've been here.

    Cons

Departments are very siloed. Not only do departments not work together but it seems that there is an effort to keep them from working together

    Advice to Management

Work on fostering better communication throughout the entire company. Get rid of the need to know attitude of management.

I have been working at Whiting Petroleum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Highly Compensated, Incredible Benefits, Flexible Work/Home life balance, Paid time off, sick leave and Maternity Leave. Management, in the North Dakota offices, are highly qualified individuals who have the company as well as each individuals well being at heart. Knowledgeable staff with group team effort used in almost every decision. Workload is spread evenly.

    Cons

Slow promotional rate. Other than that I can't really think of anything else. Just a great company to work for!

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and please continue to care for your employees as you have for years!!

I have been working at Whiting Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, especially in regards to healthcare! Like any company, the culture and management style varies depending on which group you're in. I was fortunate enough to be in an amazing group with an excellent manager so my experience overall was a lot better than others.

    Cons

Very old school culture and management style especially in the C-Suite. Whiting is trying to turn things around slowly but there is a lot of push back from some of the senior leadership. Career development within the company is not well defined and it can be very difficult to move up within this company, especially if you're not an engineer or have some level of higher education.

    Advice to Management

It's time for some new leadership! Whiting is losing and will continue to lose top talent if they don't start valuing their employees and what they provide to the overall success of the company. Great benefits can only go so far and with other O&G companies offering competitive benefits just as good (if not better) but also have better leadership, direction, culture and career development opportunities Whiting is going to have a hard time retaining and/or recruiting top talent and will continue in it's downward spiral.

    Pros

Great company, great people , management concerned about employees and wanting individuals to succeed. Great opportunity advancement. The company has grown significantly within the last few years.

    Cons

At times, there could be a tremendous amount of work, possibly requiring overtime. As with any company, there are certain individuals who may be unprofessional or demanding. By remaining focused on the job responsibilities, the individuals can be minimized or avoided.

    Advice to Management

Continue to connect and include employees in changes, company improvements. This will allow employees to have a sense of engagement and feel valued. Acknowledge employee efforts.
