Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

5 Stars for the Culture, People, and Food

Mar 28, 2023 - Talent Acquisition Coordinator in Saskatoon, SK

      Business Outlook

      Pros

I really enjoy working on Vendasta as it is an exciting working environment where you feel supported and engaged to do your best work. The culture is very conducive to being collaborative since it has an open-floor design, and communication and transparency is important throughout the organization. Aside from the culture and people, my next favourite thing is the food. We have an Food Operations Manager and Food Operations team, along with a eating area on the 16th floor. I appreciate them very very much!

      Cons

Nothing really that I can think of right now.

Thanks for this review. We agree that our food in Saskatoon is a major perk for people working at the corporate headquarters. Your other points, around the collaborative culture and the open and transparent communication are spot on, and that doesn't only apply to head office. That is a foundation part of our culture throughout our company.

      Pros

Above industry average salary range Free food and drink on Fridays Subsidised food and refreshments Great benefits Great commission Strong brand image in the industry Great tools and system to work with

      Cons

Extremely poor culture You can not dare to share your feedback and you will be thrown under the bus The HR department is too arrogant and ignorant. Never question them or you will be in trouble Managers are dumb and they blame you for their mistakes Your target will be changed with the mood of the managers The performance doesn't matter as long as you are in the good book of the manager Onboarding training is too poor and doesn't make any difference Regular coaching is missing by managers. There is more intimidation and less guidance by managers The new joiners are given the roles and responsibilities without appropriate training and coaching Team leaders are immoral and corrupt Really high employee turnover You will always see more people coming in and more people going out. It means that people don't stay here for a long time

We are disappointed to read your review of your time at Vendasta. The company you are describing is not one that we recognize. We strive to run an open and transparent company here, and employees are encouraged to reach out to their managers if they have concerns. If they're not comfortable talking to their managers, the senior management team is always available to hear concerns. We're a fast-moving company, and that pace is not for everyone, but those who thrive in an entrepreneurial environment thrive and excel here. Even though you've left Vendasta, we would invite you to get in touch with us and discuss your concerns. We are always trying to get better as managers and as a company, and we'd like to learn from your experience if we can.

      Love it here, but frustrated

      Apr 4, 2023 - Sales

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The people are amazing. There are incredible opportunities to learn and grow. Depending on your position, you may be able to be partially or fully remote (though this is not consistent across all departments). If you are agile and comfortable with change, you can try different positions and challenge yourself.

      Cons

The executive team has veto power and can derail projects or conduct restructuring at the drop of a hat. High stress environment. Pay conversations are strained and difficult. Employee led change can take a very long time to implement. High turnover, low job security.

      VP of People Operations

Thank you for taking the time to review your work at Vendasta. We agree that our people are amazing and there are many different paths to grow your career. We are a fast-moving company in a fast-moving industry, and no two days are ever the same. As a current employee, you know that we have recently completed an extensive compensation review in sales, and while some people find compensation questions difficult, we have tried to overhaul our system in an open and transparent manner. At more than 800 people, we're definitely not a start up anymore, and many of our practices reflect that - however, we do try to hold onto some of the start-up culture that makes this place unique.

It's not as good as they show you

      Business Outlook

      Pros

It has a very strong reputation in the industry You will be working with some of the smartest people and there is a lot to learn from everyone Amazing infrastructure. It gives a stunning 360 degree view of the Saskatoon. I was in sales and the pay is really good. The commission structure is way above the industry standard. You can make a ton of money. Everything is well-documented. There is nothing you can not know The podcast and learning resources are very powerful and engaging. The online learning tools are excellent and way above the standard. A huge team of 500+ people Highly advanced and sophisticated software and tools that makes your work fast and efficient Vendasta is offering many world-class products and services. They are sellable and are in need. There is a lot of scope for advancement. It's called 'one company many careers'. If you want to change the role after some time, there is a wider choice to move into. The company is growing by leaps and bounds. It has a huge potential and a bright future They give a lot of benefits you will probably get at most of the places. I have used them and I appreciate their gesture. The CEO and the directors will warmly welcome you with a lunch and interact with you in the first week of your joining. Free lunch and drink every Friday. Almost half of the food is free in the canteen everyday and other food is at lower rates. Unlimited free soft drinks, coffee and refreshment.

      Cons

You can not trust anyone. People gossip a lot and you will never know who is with you and against you. They have a creepy way to know you. They rely on their assumption and others' feedback rather than talking to you. Most of the time, they are wrong and they don't want to admit. There is too much of backbiting and the management loves doing it. The seniors are too lazy and irresponsible. If you are in a junior position, you will always be the victim of the crime that your seniors would commit The leadership and senior managers are morally corrupted and never bother to help you They would always say they have a positive culture and you can share what you think and feel easily. Do not believe in it because you will become their number one enemy if you share an honest feedback. They have a stupid culture department who are supposed to create a positive culture but instead they would play dirty politics and stab at your back. The managers and colleagues are always keeping you under stress for no valid reason. It's just they enjoy doing it. The concept of teamwork is only a phrase. You will be ridiculed and demotivated in front of your team members. As I was in sales, the salary is excellent but they will make your path difficult. They will change the target as soon as you get closer to the target for the month. There is a leadership development team and god knows what they are doing because almost all middle-level and junior-level employees are always unhappy with their management. You will not get adequate support when you need. The team-leaders will not tell you what to do and ask you to figure out but they expect you to do it correctly. If you make any mistake, they will call you dumb and they impolitely tell you how to do things correctly. I have seen them treat some of their best talents poorly. The training resources are good but the training team is extremely unhelpful, unkind and doesn't care for you at all. They are demoralising and discouraging group of people. I have seen people feeling stuck, stressed and confused during the training. They ask for your feedback but they want to know only positive feedback. They care less about how good you are and how good work you have done so far. They will make you feel like a loser whenever they get a chance. DO NOT get impressed with their shiny videos and pictures. They glow and glorify to hide the dark truth of their disgusting culture.

We frankly don't recognize the company you're describing in your review. We have an open culture here that places a premium on integrity and staying true to your word. As a fast growing company, there is always work to do, but we are incredibly proud of the corporate culture we have created at Vendasta. It does not sound like Vendasta was a good fit for your personality, and we hope you find success in your career and benefit from the experience you garnered here.

      Good company overall, always improving

Sept 2, 2022 - Director, Product Management in Saskatoon, SK
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - A lot of heart, soul and hard-work put into the company by the founders, exec team and employees. - Co-workers are friendly and easy to communicate with and to work with. - They have a diverse workforce and I always felt OK speaking up and providing a different point of view. - They provide people with opportunities to try different roles and to succeed. - Lots of involvement from an experienced and approachable exec team where they would meet with teams regularly and even coach people, no matter how busy they were (I was part of several meetings that had the CEO, CTO, VPs, GMs and when I left the exec team was still doing meet-and-greets with new employees when they were a 600+ person company. This doesn't happen in the real world usually). - Interesting products to work on, with a focus on building product management expertise through coaching and more. - They make an attempt to improve their processes and ways of working by following best practices from well known tech companies. - Good work-life balance overall

      Cons

      - More focus would definitely help - could go deeper with product initiatives vs spreading out or adding more products/features. - Some of their main products needed an overhaul at a deep level in order to get functioning again. - Sometimes changes too fast even for tech, and this results in many people feeling stretched, unfocused or without clear direction. - Didn't allow people to work remote from outside SK when I was there but might have changed now. - Slightly low compensation for a tech company but this may have changed after I left

      Pros

I had a great work experience at Vendasta. The people I met here are all great and nice. Vendasta pays attention to employees' work-life balance. Every Friday's all-hands meetings promote communication between the company and employees. I'll definitely miss the time I spent at Vendasta.

      Cons

Many job positions are not remote-friendly. I can understand that because not all IT companies wanna go with full-remote mode. However, for some senior positions, working remotely is acceptable.

      Cons

Vendasta Platform is great but a complex product. Vendasta SDR salaries should be higher then other SDR's from the industry.

      Pros

The managers and team leads are very supportive which really inspires great work. Co-workers are okay with the pleasantries. Office environment is quite welcoming and you feel happy the moment you walk in. An on site chef means I don't have to worry a lot about my meal. Vendasta really does try to care about the welfare of their workers which is quite impressive

      Cons

It gets really noisy on some floors making it hard to concentrate on work. The wage is quite low when compared to industry standard but not the worse I guess. Nothing else I can think of
