I worked at Vancouver Community College part-time

    Pros

The pay was okay, a little bit over minimum wage. Gave me 7.5 hours per shift. Flexible shifts. Didn't need to commit to this job, if you couldn't work then you couldn't work. They understand that you're student.

    Cons

I was on-call, they would probably only need me like once or twice every 2 weeks. Boring

I worked at Vancouver Community College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

VCC offers competitive wages & benefits. They try to offer opportunities to grow - but it's not that easy.

    Cons

Working in the hair design/ esthetics department was one of the most discouraging jobs I've ever worked. Working as a PA you are basically just a receptionist, that handles a disgusting amount of abuse from the public. There is nothing wrong with VCC itself as a company - but working with the public/ and students behind the desk was extremely difficult.

I worked at Vancouver Community College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Relaxed work environment. No obvious politics behind. Good benefits.

    Cons

VCC still follows the practice of treating its own employees as disposable, even after 1 year! instead of working out in improving the differences. Sad they can get away with such coward leadership.

    Pros

Faculty and some staff are dedicated to making students experience a positive one

    Cons

Leadership at the very top is severely lacking. As well, hiring practices are at least 20 years outdated.

    Pros

Fantastic organization and leadership that supports professional development. Organization really believes in the student experience and strives to increase standards on a constant basis.

    Cons

Management positions are often predetermined and union policy is not always followed in that regard however varies by department. Nonetheless, not a major issue.

I worked at Vancouver Community College full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

VCC provides employee ready programs to many people that can not get into any other schools. It was founded on a vocational model and for the most part, it still follows that model. Most programs have a closed enrollment of 20 students and many of those students don't graduate. VCC advertises they have 20,000 students a year, but the data is misleading. Many of those students are Continuing Education students that sign up for one day classes.

    Cons

This is a very in efficient model and extremely costly to the government. Since 2009 VCC has gone through several restructuring, but seems to have made it worst. When almost all post secondary schools are thriving with international education VCC is still barely surviving. The school is in such a mess, it has a different time attracting qualified management. The few good people that have been in senior management only stay a short time then leave, those that stay do so because they could never get a job anywhere else. If you go to VCC it's like a ghost town. So many programs have been cut or classes only run 3-4 days a week. With class sizes half of colleges like, Langara or Douglas. It's a sad site and very costly to BC tax payers.
