I worked at VMware full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - community and charity services are encouraged... paid 40 hrs to volunteer and matching gifts
    - the teams worked well and the front-line engineers were easy to work with and helpful

    Cons

Senior Management (directors and VPs) lied until he last day, prior to closing the support center... for over a year they promised and painted rosy pic of "center of excellence" and dropped the support center. Just after shutting down the center, VMware went full swing hiring in all other support centers!!

    Advice to Management

Be honest and truthful... and front-line managers should appreciated employees' hard work and infinite number of requests and benchmarks added each year on their performance metrics. Promises were never kept... crazy work schedule with No work/life (although paid weekend/OT etc). You were expected to work min 50-60 hrs just to keep up!

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Cutting edge products that are top rated in the industry. Relatively good collaboration still exists between departments/units on common goals and not silo approach.

    Cons

Short sighted financial decisions on short term outcomes vs longer term longevity, to approach greatness vs competitive or average even. Far too much globalization of workforce for cost cutting vs ensuring equity in skill and expertise globally.

    Advice to Management

Understand what your longest standing customers are saying about what best things have faded and revitalize those business practices.

I worked at VMware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Challenging projects that actually get completed. Smart and driven people to work with. Great rewards for hard work.

    Cons

Sometimes there's too much work for the hours in the day. Would like to be able to attend industry conferences, but those don't seem to be in the budget.

    Cons

Management is doing weird stuff to steer the company back to high growth

I have been working at VMware full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The culture of the local employees - the relationships built amongst staff and the continuous learning atmosphere that was fostered.

    Cons

In its final days VMware Burlington was a revolving door, except the door only swung one way - such that the "VMX has left the building"

    Advice to Management

If after this much time has passed and no impact was affected then no further advice is going to help.

    I worked at VMware full-time

    Pros

    - Competitive Pay, great benefits
    - Great place to work if you aren't in support
    - Exposed to lots of technology

    Cons

    - Magic is gone
    - People aren't always promoted based on technical merit
    - Little / No time for training (learning on the job, with customers data, not so good)

    Advice to Management

There's no advice that I could give management, other than to look at support as a revenue stream, and not a cost of doing business.
