I worked at University of Waterloo

    Pros

For a recent grad, the experience of teaching many students, managing graduate students, and responding to hundreds of emails on top of ordinary job requirements was in retrospect good preparation for work outside the University. It takes awhile to have the same amount of clout over programs/projects that a lecturer has in the private world. And lecturing is fun.

    Cons

The work dries up after each term and there are no guarantees until a few weeks before the next term begins. After years of graduate work and accumulated debt, being paid less than minimum wage with no realistic path to associate professor positions is a smack in the face. And with no benefits one wants to move on fast.

I have been working at University of Waterloo for more than a year

    Pros

-The hours are generally light enough so you don't need to spend days on TA duties, but this is contingent on the course you TA and prof. -The pay is good relative to the number of hours worked (again contingent on course and prof). -Sometimes, you learn a new thing or two from the course material.

    Cons

-Your workload is highly dependent on the class and professor you TA for, so do your research and ask senior graduate students before you enter your course preferences. -Sometimes dealing with students and settling their group project disputes becomes a sisyphean task as there's 200 of them and two TAs. -Sometimes the grad student you TA with is incompetent, effectively doubling the work for you (i.e., do the original work and fix their mistakes).
