I worked at University of Cambridge full-time

    Pros

Interesting work, excellent opportunities for learning and skills advancement, wonderful lab colleagues (PI excluded), collaborative and innovative atmosphere in general, world-renowned reputation.

    Cons

This wasn't a fault of the University itself, as the lab wasn't based on-campus, but the lab leader ought to be investigated for bullying or at least monitored. While it was an amazing opportunity in general, the lab staff were generally scared of this person, for whom nothing is good enough, and all staff are treated like they're stupid for months, until the boss decides you're smart enough to be trusted. One lab member in particular seemed to be the target of unreasonable expectations and bullying behaviour, and with his fantastic experience, intelligence and resilience, has now moved on to a better job. The boss here has almost certainly derailed my scientific career, as the treatment I received has made me terrified to even apply to further positions or continue in academia; other staff that are still there are trying to find a way out of the lab and may even leave science altogether (which would be a damn shame as they're some of the most dedicated and talented scientists I've met).

    Advice to Management

Check up on your PIs, especially the ones with a few leavers at once. You have a reputation to uphold.
