I worked at University of Calgary part-time

    Pros

Work from home, on your own time. The work was challenging and required a lot of out of the box thinking

    Cons

The work at times was difficult and the Professor did not have a technical background. very little cons

I worked at University of Calgary full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My immediate boss and my colleagues were pretty great. The mechanic in the basement was really helpful.

    Cons

Administration is useless at best. Byzantine bureaucracy. Took weeks or longer to get a no-touch sink fixed after it stopped working. Idiotic decisions like spending hundreds of thousands on a huge bike rack. The hours for getting new lab coats are unacceptably short. Surprising number of really bad accidents occur at the UC.

    Advice to Management

Fire yourselves. Stop shoveling tons of money at things that look cool.

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Excellent work-life balance and benefits.

    Cons

Internal candidates are favoured more. Too much politics in each group and department.

I worked at University of Calgary full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

energetic leadership, sets the threshold high. expects a lot from the researchers. Already wanting to compete with highly renowned research institutions in north america.

    Cons

Have to be more realistic, the university is still young. Like everywhere, the research activities rely on funding and when the economy is not stable, the university should adjust its speed to match the researcher's budgets.

    Advice to Management

Be more on the ground with researchers, reach higher but step by step. Glory will come, just be patient. Develop more collaborations with international researchers, that will help get the university's name everywhere and get highly skilled researchers to join.

I worked at University of Calgary part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I was a student at the time with an entry-level job at Haskayne. As a junior, I felt just as valued as everyone else in the team, given they were all experienced professionals. My direct superiors made sure to teach me new things everyday and to equip me with skills I would need after I graduate. The team was like a family to me.

    Cons

Because it's a big school, there are sub-cultures and sometimes the different departments have different cultures; which makes it a little difficult to see eye to eye on some project details.

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time

    Pros

Not bad, hours are pretty good and flexible. Pay is better than minimum retail. Atmosphere is laid back and vacation is flexible.

    Cons

Slow pace, don't learn a whole lot. Be prepared for lots of bureacraucy and red tape to accomplish tasks.

    Advice to Management

Provide more incentive to perform to optimal levels. Most workers here are definitely capable of providing better customer service.
