      Pros

UHN is great if full time with benefits

      Cons

Contract research positions and how your experience will be are very dependent on your manager/PI.

      High Turnover

      Pros

good for learning the world of clinical trials, you quickly learn time management (sink or swim environment), a stepping stone to pharma.

      Cons

can be a political working environment (depending on the department), hard to progress within UHN career-wise, can be an unreasonably high work load, not the best onboarding process, low pay the for the amount of work/responsibilities, management not as supportive, the HR department is HORRIBLE (they do not care about you), zero positive reinforcement. No sense of community - maybe due to the high turnaround.

OK but not worth the commute

Jun 11, 2020 - Registered Nurse in Toronto, ON

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Teaching hospital so challenging work with cutting edge medicine Colleagues great

      Cons

Punitive sick policy - over 3 days sick (12 hr shifts) in 6 months you get a punitive letter and escalates a level each 6 month period - finally at 4th level they threaten termination ...(how long does it take CEO or manager to get over a flu?? Most people take about a week. Mgt or those on 8 hour shifts can take a week off and be under the 36 hour punitive policy Nurses and those on 12 hour shifts take more than 3 days and they get a letter - does not matter if you have MD note Mgt talks a good talk but actions speak louder than words. Some managers great but like most organizations some are terrible There is nothing an employee can do if they have a terrible manager as directors and HR automatically side with mgt If there is community hospital closer to you do not bother commuting downtown to UHN- not worth it- expensive for both public transit and parking and even with "discount" staff parking is outrageous...

managers are promoted based on favoritism who lack qualification to perform; worst political game play; good talent cannot be retained as a result.
