    Pros

Great staff discounts, sales incentives from companies, very motivating if you're a dedicated runner.

    Cons

Upper management does not care, low paying job. If you get stuck with a bad store manager it can be brutal.

I worked at The Running Room full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -good atmosphere for athletic people
    -good staff discount
-prefer internal hiring, easyish to move up

    Cons

-company doesn't give breaks or lunches and staff are expected to work full work days without
-area managers/upper management are fickle, in their eyes you could be the best employee one day and the worst another
    -company doesn't value employees
-no opportunity for pay increase, if you do get one it's next to nothing
-if the company performs poorly, upper management blames it on store managers + store staff but won't look at things that are their fault like prices, product, promos
-most staff doesn't stick around for long
-expected to do events but given little to no budget and managers pay out of pocket
-staff (esp. managers) expected to do extra jobs like teach clinics on their own time but are not compensated
-managers work 40+ hours a week instore and then are expected to do be available 24/7 and do work on personal time, but none of this is reflected in their pay.

    Advice to Management

you want the managers to run the store as if it's their own but you don't give any freedom in that regard. your managers are on the frontlines talking to customers, clinics, and runclub everyday, we know what customers want to buy. your managers could run the company + their stores to be more efficient and successful if you would loosen your overcontrolling grasp.

high turnover rate in the company should indicate to you that your employees aren't happy. perhaps pay them a fair wage and treat them well and they will stay.

I worked at The Running Room full-time

    Pros

The discount is generous and owner is wonderful.

    Cons

Head office is dark dingy and over crowded. There is absolutely no culture or positivity. The inmates quite literally run the asylum. There is absolutely no leadership and unity among departments causing cattiness amongst peers and power struggles. Pay is very very low. Turn over is very very high. The owner is a very kind gracious man but I don't think he knows about the chaos in each department.

    Advice to Management

Be managers, be leaders! Pay fairly, encourage and reward. Working people like dogs in that dump creates misery!

  9. "Avoid unless you really have to work there. I don't know much about retail level but head office is a toxic environment."

I worked at The Running Room full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They pay you on time and you get discounts on activewear. It is bearable to work here but not for the long term if you want any sort of career advancement or significant salary increase.

    Cons

    - Adapting way too slow with technology (Calling it a marathon, in my opinion is a total excuse)
    - Toxic work environment
    - No company culture (A large chunk of staff just want to look for new jobs)
    - Low pay to market value of roles and benefits are not enough to make up for this.
    - Inexperienced senior staff
    - Disorganization
    - Quick to jump to solutions to problems based on whoever is on top instead of coming up with a well thought out solution.
    - Upper management has a habit of blaming lower level employees or stores but who is the leader in this situation?

    Advice to Management

Management could benefit from conflict resolution or leadership classes. Morale is too low for anyone to stay there long term without becoming down on themselves. This company has great potential but there is not the right upper management behind it. They need to innovate fast and soon because your competitors are certainly closing in. Running Room could potentially benefit from an outside consultant coming in to help clean up a little.

It's interesting to see other people leaving similar reviews to this so maybe it's time to practice active listening skills rather than passing the blame on others. A little humility goes a long way.

I have been working at The Running Room part-time

    Pros

The Running community, great to see familiar faces during free run clubs. Able to provide solutions to customers to help them select the proper shoes, whether it's for running or simply walking.

    Cons

The amount of hours given. Sometimes certain expectations not easy, with only one person on shift, also not efficient to see what has already been completed.

    Advice to Management

Would like to see more ways to ensure employees are empowered, attention to details is good but errors should not make people feel bad.

I have been working at The Running Room full-time

    Pros

Great co-workers at the Store level. Employee Purchase Program is generous.

    Cons

Unreasonable amount of hours and duties for Store Managers for an absolutely meager pay. Culture of constant confrontation and anger.

    Advice to Management

Being Tone Deaf will stop paying eventually. Listen to your employees, they are much smarter than what you give them credit for.
