Underpaid and overworked

Pros

Lots of smart people to learn from

Cons

Prepare to be overworked and underpaid. What’s a 9-5? Or a 9-6? Nobody here would know! If you work in comms, then expect a lot of condescending attitudes when you don’t just “get it” and an expectation to always be on and responsive even if you have 10 clients to balance. You can get lucky with a director or principal who is a good manager wanting to support junior staff, but that’s not common here, at least in comms. It’s a shame because there are a lot of smart people to learn from but not worth risking your health over. For the amount of hours you work, they don’t pay enough. It’s a trend with a lot of social impact firms it seems but the work suffers because of it.

Pros

I learned a lot. The benefits are good, but nothing different than majority of other companies. (401k match, healthcare, unlimited PTO). Although "unlimited PTO" is just code for "you can take off whenever you want but we'll make it difficult for you to do that with the amount of work you have."

Cons

Toxic (and I mean toxic) management, complete lack of transparency and consistency when it comes to promotions, raises, work from home protocols, and workload expectations. It's a miracle I lasted almost 4 years, but my mental health really took a toll. There is A LOT of good ol boys club energy, which is ironic for a "progressive" firm. I saw another post describing it as "bizarre." Spot on. My fav example: a male manager "jokingly" insinuated in front of my whole team that the only reason I successfully got meetings scheduled with republican congressmen for a client was because I "am young and pretty."

What a disappointment

Pros

Flat structure so you are not heavily managed. Good networking with name brand clients, which could help you move into a new position at a bigger, better company.

Cons

Commission-based pay scale based on how many accounts you work on and if the principles don't like you, then you won't get to work on a lot of projects, which equals no money. Profit sharing is not transparent, so you really don't know how much you are getting paid until the end of the year. Hard to navigate culture where the socially awkward cofounders are in charge of everything, no matter your title or skillset. No formality to anything. Also, their hiring strategy is to hire the children of the rich and famous for the plum positions that don't require much effort, and then hire people who are out of work with no powerful family-connections to come in do the heavy lifting.
