I have been working at The Beer Store part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Beer Store is a place where you can put in your time and earn your wage. Once you are hired it is near impossible to be fired, short of stealing from the company or being truant too many times.

The atmosphere is fairly laid back with the right manager and the job is fairly easy at the retail level. It pays well, and is a fairly secure job.

    Cons

Very hard to advance to full time or manager. There is a lot of nepotism within the company and the upper management doesn't really have time to help you advance if you are looking to move up in the company. Also as of this review, the company is shrinking and they are not looking to hire more people into full time, so there is very little prospect of advancement in the near future.

The job is sometimes very gritty. Depending on where you are employed it can be a hassle. In the suburbs you'll have to deal with teenagers trying to buy beer under age, and soccer moms giving it to you because they had a bad day. In the inner city you have to deal with aggressive and depressing drunks and alcoholics that you have to turn away. There's theft and the danger that comes with someone who really needs their fix and doesn't have any money. Beer is a drug, it's a hard thing to manage for those who are not prepared.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with more respect, and hold yourselves accountable. If staff have a complaint about a manager, maybe do something about it instead of shuffling managers around to other stores.

I have been working at The Beer Store part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast paced, flexible hours, union, decent wages, raise every year, job security, can be personal with customers, ability to take off time.

    Cons

Dirty, rude customers, poor management, no room for growth, dying business, opinions don’t matter, no hour consistency, management love to cut and save hours

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, give everyone the option whether they would like to learn basic open/close procedures so you’re not scratching your head wondering whose going to close the store because someone called in.

I have been working at The Beer Store part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good part-time job. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Stores are never given enough staff hours in comparison to other retail stores (like the LCBO).

    Advice to Management

Increase staffing levels to make things better for both staff and customers!

I have been working at The Beer Store part-time

    Pros

-If working there for several years the pay increase is actually decent

    Cons

-Very difficult to work your way up, the union decides when positions are available so even if your boss thinks you should be promoted it's only an option if there's spots made available by the union
-My district manager didn't care about safety really, we used a 10ft ladder that was extremely wobbly and he just simply blamed it on the floor not being level
-My manager overworked me for a minimum wage job

    Advice to Management

    Treat your staff with respect
