I have been working at Surrey School District full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Union, municipal pension, possibly of summers off, benefits- other Co workers who are trying to support each Other against the odds.

    Cons

Very poor training and job prep. Left to oneself to figure out job duties in spite of an ever increasing workload and poor staff allotment. Very out of date and out of touch formulas for determining clerical allotment, especially in an ever growing and rapidly changing population base. Money rules the decisions rather than the best practise for their employees. Upper leadership resistant to hearing the wisdom... from the very people directly impacted. Refusal to hear the hard stuff in order to make the courageous and brave changes to honour their workers and create a functional and pleasant working environment.

    Advice to Management

Your best and strongest solutions are found in the criticism of the voices you refuse to hear… Any organization that puts saving itself over the individual is asking for failure. You are regularly losing good people who have served you and work hard but are exhausted fighting with the resistance you have refused to open yourself up to - so you can hear the truth and help them to help you. Find your courage to... honour the people who work hard for you and listen to what they’re telling you. Go to your greatest critics within the organization and hear them. They can see what you refuse to see.

I worked at Surrey School District full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Collective agreement perks. Work life balance.

    Cons

Disorganized communication between major departments. Lack of quality training. High workload and lack of adequate funding flow creates burnout to lower end workers. Unionized environment creates disparity between those who work and those who don't want to work.

    Advice to Management

Good luck with hiring as the baby boomers retire and millennials refuse to deal with the cons mentioned above.

I worked at Surrey School District full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Unions, variety of positions and choices, benefits, pensions, lots of options to find your place, some great people, some training but not enough

    Cons

some not so great people, office politics, as you climb the ladder it becomes harder, less choice, more politics, the environment is pretty toxic, no crossover training, you're expected to arrive and just catch on.

    Advice to Management

staff should be able to review their superiors with anonimity, people need to be accountable, cross over training when staff leave

I have been working at Surrey School District full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Teaching is a calling. If you like to lift up others and create engaging learning experiences, you'll love your job.

    Cons

My biggest challenges aren't the students. It's often the rare occasion when a difficult Principal comes through for a few years.

    Advice to Management

Try to vet Principals a bit more.
