I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lot's of great people and opportunity to move to different areas of the company if you are a self starter and motivated to make connections yourself.

    Cons

It can be very difficult to move up to a leadership position and leadership gets little to no training on how to be effective. The rating system depends solely on how much your leaders like you and whether they are willing to take the time to understand what you do.

    Advice to Management

Be more forthcoming with employees on their succession plans. Improve the employee rating system.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Largest energy company in Canada, laid back front line workers, mostly good people you work with. Gain great experience in oilsands. Potential for great career oppurtunitites.

    Cons

Management always asks for more with less, unrealistic expectations. Department is too leaned out, employees are overworked as a result. Employees not fairly performance reviewed/lots of politics involved in determining raises/promotions. Company has an unofficial policy of not moving employees within Suncor out of Fort McMurray before 8 years of service in oil sands, can feel stuck in position/department and management not open to discussing career opportunities outside the region. Starting pay not as good as it used to before, can find other opportunities in more favorable cities for similar pay/benefits. Not as attractive to work in the region anymore and as a result quality of employees getting offers in Fort McMurray is declining. NO OVERTIME NEED TO WORK EXTRA ALL THE TIME

    Advice to Management

Treat fort mcmurray differently as it needs to be, the city will never be like Calgary or Toronto no matter how much you try to make it feel. Improve work life balance for employees living in this region and let go of the leash you have on them in fort mcmurray, there is a lot of skills/expertise in your people that would still be beneficial to the company in other locations.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work, many different opportunities for career path, easy to move within organization, great pay compared to competitors and fair evaluations. Company has seen success even in some of the toughest years, and has a very loyal employee base. Lots of subject matter experts, high tenure employees and flexibility for work life balance.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, middle and senior management heavy, heavy on processes and opportunities to streamline especially with decision making. Missing the mark on engagement especially for younger generation, could spend a little more time on succession planning for front line leader levels.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on employee engagement, granting autonomy in roles and culture.

    Pros

Great place to work. A lot to learn. Nice people. Good salary. A lot of training.

    Cons

No cons. Only thing is too cold in winter(-40 to 50). Not much to do in the remote and small town. Work is good, life is boring.

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I would say hardly 15% or less people would be getting total emoluments less than $100k per year. Mostly transparent atmosphere; Good resources within the corporate teams. Benefits, amenities and support services are excellent.

    Cons

Due to few disgruntled senior employees, real contributing employees are overlooked- quite common in large org. Org structure is still heavy on top (VP + Directors) even after restructuring. there are instances where single digit # of employees are reporting to such individuals. There is potential to reduce the cost/ waste in materials, contracts (particularly projects), employee benefits (like cell phones, benefits) and in travels.

    Advice to Management

There are still opportunities to optimize the organization structure by reducing the senior staff- Directors and above. I would support decentralizing the service teams further. There's room for improvement (simplifying) performance review process.
