I have been working at Suncor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are less pro's now days; mainly vacation days, benefits and great co-workers. The commitment to United Way is impressive but, has declined in recent years.

    Cons

After numerous re-orgs, expense reductions and numerous issues with internal support groups Rack foraward is a shell of what it once was. Poor leadership that is uninspiring during difficult times only makes the environment worse.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to inspire and add warmth even in difficult times.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

As a large company there were opportunities to get varied work experience, vacation and flex days were generous, people were friendly

    Cons

Flex days were taken away, the ability to move up became very political, lack of women and POC in leadership positions

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, and have honest conversations with them regarding their goals, especially those beginning their careers. Do not prioritize some employees, especially if they appear to share a similar background to you or are all former members of a specific hiring group, such a new grads, unless you want there to be a perception of favouritism. This perception, regardless of if it is true or not is incredibly damaging to all other employees moral and make a mockery of any claims that you reward based on performance.
Additionally as a company of Suncor’s size, and given the current year, to have it be suggested that someone may not be suitable for a role because of their gender is both sexist and out of date. Prejudices from external stakeholders such as partners, should not be tolerated, instead Suncor should commit to their claim of ‘raising the bar’ and being an ‘industry leader’ and promote individuals most qualified for a role, regardless of their gender or race.
