Safety is the first priority. Great positive atmosphere to work in. Leaders are very approachable and listen to what people have to say. Excellent opportunities to learn and develop. A company that cares about the environment, future and employees.

    Cons

I have not heard of any comments from peers or management to support any negative feedback.

    Advice to Management

    Advice to Management

Look at who is actually doing the work you require then those who say they can.

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent compensation and some of the compressed shifts make the work life balance and poor working conditions bearable in Northern locations. It's not any worse and possibly slightly better than the other oil sands employers (there is not a high bar set to accomplish this).

    Cons

Bullying, sexual harassment and sexism are alive and well. Too many people in positions they are not suited to, especially in the Northern locations, but they remain based on who they know. Safety is very much a concern with the number of deaths that still occur in the Northern operations. Too many people that can parrot the jargon but don’t truly understand or apply the concepts for safety and efficiency. Incomplete procedures are pushed and change frequently before any real progress can be made before moving in a different direction. It is a demoralizing place to work but people tolerate this dynamic based on adequate compensation and time off due to compressed work shifts. Any higher star rating than a 2 are based on financial & benefit compensation. With out these benefits it would rate much lower.

    Advice to Management

Too many poor managers in too many positions. Managment moves too frequently which generally creates additional chaos that often does not settle out before they move on. Cumbersome and incomplete processes that add little to no value. Many things do not need to be complicated to the degree that they are except to possibly create job security for some areas/groups.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people, plenty of challenges to keep you engaged with dynamic conditions. Room for growth towards middle of career with plenty of streams to choose from.

    Cons

Inflexible schedules that can be hard to work around and there is no fast tracked advancement in early career. Even if you completely out perform.

    Advice to Management

Be able to fast track someone’s career who deserves it and be able to fully invest in the talent you’ve hired.

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast paced, good leadership, lots of opportunities, great people, excellent collaboration, excellent compensation, good work/life balance

    Cons

as an oil/gas company we suffer with the downturn on oil prices which affects the payment raises/external training/investment in new projects; work in remote location is also challenging sometimes

    Advice to Management

Keep investing on your people, we have an excellent pool of talents and that's whats makes the company so great!

I worked at Suncor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good location downtown if you are into that

    Cons

I was harassed by my boss here, took them 7 weeks of ‘investigation’ while they figured out how to follow their own fancy policies. Eventually, left and sought legal counsel. They were quick to keep it hushed.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of Management employees who are violating business code of conduct

I have been working at Suncor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay relative to other industries. Lots of opportunity to make lateral moves outside your area of expertise.

    Cons

Many more poor leaders than good. If you're more planful in nature you won't fit Suncor's cowboy-like, get-it-done, culture and will have a harder time getting recognition for good performance. Senior leaders are out of touch with the front line and few mid-level leaders have strategic thinking or strategic translation capabilities. Career planning/development processes are just check-box items for many leaders and success planning processes are completely lacking transparency.

    Advice to Management

Suncor has some great employees that believe in doing their best despite constant organizational changes, job-level compression, limited strategic planning capability in the organization, and poor career and learning development. But, it seems the company is at a tipping point right now. My recommendation would be to get much more transparent on who Suncor really is right now (and Operational Discipline behaviours aren't sufficient) and stop promoting leaders with strong technical and tactical skills but little in the way of leadership and strategic-thinking skills.
