I have been working at Stikeman Elliot full-time

    Pros

Gorgeous office, pretty good pay, stable work, some nice people, free coffee. There are actually lots of good things but they get can overshadowed by the many many illogical annoyances of working here.

    Cons

Can be really boring, slow moving, not everyone is good at their job but they’ve been here forever, and HR and managers are really formal and not in touch with what employees want or think. Policies are a good example. Everything is about lawyers and managers and little thought is given to the staff. Not keeping up with technology and lots of silly processes and new systems that waste time and annoy employees. Always behind with this stuff. They might even use an abacus in finance, typewriters in admin and who even knows what most people do all day in each department. Lots of paper pushers who do tasks and don’t think whether there is a better way or how it might affect other people. Really need to update technology and make it easy for all people to do their jobs and not just the lawyers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and help your employees instead of delegating to them or assuming they’re lazy and entitled. Stop tying things up in red tape and make things happen more quickly, but actually ask employees what they want because you seem to have no clue. Rely on the young people instead of assuming they’re spoiled.

  5. "Decent work environment / Lacks creativity"

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time

    Pros

Great building, nice offices, decent pay and salaries. The marketing team collaborated well.

    Cons

Due to the pre-existing brand and culture of the firm, there was little room for creativity. Projects became monotonous.

    Advice to Management

The distinction between lawyers and "non-lawyers" is quite apparent and decreases work morale.

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Building in Vancouver is very nice

    Cons

Staff are absolutely miserable as everyone works long hours for little reward. The lawyers are hierarchical and have no respect for company culture or work/life balance. The Vancouver office will be the most miserable experience of your life - stay away.

    Advice to Management

There are too many problems with the Vancouver office to even make any suggestions...such a horrible environment.

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with at Stikeman (in the real estate group) were incredibly smart, detail-oriented and motivated. The firm has a good mentorship program and offers resources to help handle a large workload, like assistants and an administrative services centre. There are many benefits to working at a large Bay St firm like Stikeman - to me, it was the smart people, salary, perks (like bonuses, retreats and being able to expense meals when working late) and experience.

    Cons

This is a classic Bay St law firm environment. Billing time is stressful, whether you are working a lot or not enough. It can be very hard to make and keep plans. Many times you are forced to juggle so many files that you have no choice but to work late for weeks, if not months, on end to meet all your deadlines. I personally did not find the work interesting or motivating enough to keep dealing with the intensity and unpredictability of this work environment.

    Advice to Management

I truly don't know. This is a systemic industry problem.

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great work experience
    - Some exceptional lawyers

    Cons

    - Starting at the very top, the firm is very impersonal with lawyers working beside one another for years without knowing one another's names.

    Advice to Management

    - Starting at the top, encourage senior lawyers to mix and engage with more junior lawyers.
