I have been working at Stikeman Elliot full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Friendly and helpful staff (great for new people)
    - They care about Wellness
    - Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion
    - Supportive HR
    - Great location
    - Great benefits, work life balance, fun events
    - Commitment to learning & development (as a fairly new employee, I've learned more in my few months here than I did throughout the entirety of my last job)

    Cons

    - It's a busy & fast paced environment, definitely not for someone who's looking for an "easy" job (but it's very rewarding and you learn A LOT)
    - Change takes time
    - Like any workplace, there are going to be issues or things that don't make everyone happy (ie. busy & fast paced environment, strong personalities, challenging work, etc.), but the team at Stikeman Elliott has shown that they genuinely care about their staff, they're open to feedback and making improvements to what is already one of Canada's Best Employers.

    Advice to Management

    - Be open to & supportive of change
    - Pay and benefits are great, but it would be nice to see more of an emphasis on recognition across all areas of the firm (Show your support staff you appreciate their support, and how they make an impact).

I have been working at Stikeman Elliot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really professional and friendly atmosphere. Very quickly you make friends and feel like you're part of the team, which was unexpected at a big Bay st law firm. Even though it's an established and leading firm they really encourage change and innovation, so it's a much more flexible environment that you might think. Absolutely beautiful office space, incredible celebrations and events, great pay and benefits. There is so much focus on wellness, development and diversity - have never seen anything like this anywhere else. If you're someone who is results-focused and prides themselves on providing awesome service, you'll do well here because that is really valued and people really appreciate top performers. LOTS of opportunity for people who work hard and take pride in their work.

    Cons

It's a big firm so change happens but it takes time. Getting buy-in is important here and so are meetings - which means you have to be very efficient and on your game at all times. If you want to get things done very quickly and with minimal change management, this isn't the place for you. That's not a bad thing though, it really forces you to get to know people, listen to their ideas and build credibility before you can move something forward.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid of social media and social technology - enable more of that in the workplace.

    Pros

    - Great teamwork environment.
    - Firm has programs in place that encourage you to expand your learning and training.
    - Excellent location in downtown Toronto.

    Cons

    - Feeling that you are not as connected with the lawyers as you should be; lawyers (especially partners) do not recognize and appreciate efforts of business services staff as much as they should.
    - Consistently busy which impacts work/life balance.
    - Business model follows more traditional approaches which limits creativity.

    Advice to Management

Encourage a stronger relationship between business services staff and lawyers. More team building exercises.

I have been working at Stikeman Elliot full-time

    Pros

Gorgeous office, pretty good pay, stable work, some nice people, free coffee. There are actually lots of good things but they get can overshadowed by the many many illogical annoyances of working here.

    Cons

Can be really boring, slow moving, not everyone is good at their job but they’ve been here forever, and HR and managers are really formal and not in touch with what employees want or think. Policies are a good example. Everything is about lawyers and managers and little thought is given to the staff. Not keeping up with technology and lots of silly processes and new systems that waste time and annoy employees. Always behind with this stuff. They might even use an abacus in finance, typewriters in admin and who even knows what most people do all day in each department. Lots of paper pushers who do tasks and don’t think whether there is a better way or how it might affect other people. Really need to update technology and make it easy for all people to do their jobs and not just the lawyers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and help your employees instead of delegating to them or assuming they’re lazy and entitled. Stop tying things up in red tape and make things happen more quickly, but actually ask employees what they want because you seem to have no clue. Rely on the young people instead of assuming they’re spoiled.

I worked at Stikeman Elliot full-time

    Pros

Great building, nice offices, decent pay and salaries. The marketing team collaborated well.

    Cons

Due to the pre-existing brand and culture of the firm, there was little room for creativity. Projects became monotonous.

    Advice to Management

The distinction between lawyers and "non-lawyers" is quite apparent and decreases work morale.
