Get ready to be bombarded with reports!

Pay & benefits - work hard and you are rewarded. Good training programs. If you work for Starwood, the experience you get will prepare you for anything, as the expectations are huge.
Cons
work life balance - no life balance. expectation is to be available 24/7. Nicknamed Starwood Hotels & REPORTS - too many to complete and be aware of. Expectation is to be everwhere at all times - meet guests, ensure guests are happy, at same time complete reports, take courses for personal development, complete reports, know what is going on everywhere at all times! Oh yeah, and try to have a personal life where hotel issues do not creep in.

Amazing coworkers, so-so company
Nov 8, 2017 - Room Service CoordinatorRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great coworkers- for me the people I worked with made this job for me. I would’ve never stayed as long as I did without them. A high standard of customer service that you can take pride in. Working with guests has its pros and cons but can be very rewarding and interesting to meet new people. Good hotel discounts (but could be way less restrictive as far as when you can use them). Opportunities to move and work at a different properties if you are interested in career in hospitality. As an employee who received tips and service charges, the pay was quite good.
Cons
I imagine every property is different, however, at the property I worked for (a luxury collection hotel) the staff were overworked and under appreciated. The expectation was you were always available to work and left little room for work-life balance. Overall it felt like the company didn’t mind using employees to the point of burnout and then just replacing them when they finally quit from exhaustion and frustration.

Pros
Many great brands, excellent employee pricing for hotels; opportunities to take on new responibilities for self development; work/life balance possible, if you can draw your own line; some great, inspired people at all levels (front line to executives) that are passionate about the work, their people, brands and future possibilities; many bright people and opportunities for brands and products.
Cons
Some very tired, low quality brands; no, you won't be recognized or compensated for all that extra work you take on, and if it's innovative or drives revenue, your manager WILL have every right to take credit for it; if you work for someone who's willing to work 80+ hours, you can be certain that they'll demand the same of you and there's no way around it; overall leadership is lacking, with too many in management positions looking out for their own self intersts; very few actual leaders; no common goals, "my product is more important than yours"; any chance of advancement is 100% dependent on who you know, not performance based; promotion from within is slow and not compensated at the same level as external hires; current direction of the company (recent layoffs, imminent sale) has tipped the scale for overworked, disinfranchised associates; good talent is jumping ship as fast as they can.

Fairly typical corporate environment. Great perks.
Mar 15, 2014 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good pay. Good bonus opportunity. Great perks like deals on staying in gorgeous hotels around the world. Good training opportunities. People focused culture.
Cons
When I was there (a number of years ago so this might have changed) there was a lot of turn over at the SVP level. Each time a new person came in they felt like they had to do something to say "look I did that. This used to be blue, but I made it red..." which created a lot of busy work for very one that didn't actually increase revenue. Also, there was not great work/life balance. People act like they are curing cancer there and expect the employees to treat everything as such. Every year we were told to do more with less. 9-7 was a light day for me, with 9-9 being pretty typical. Unfortunately I would say this is pretty common in corporate America though.

Pros
Great travel benefits and overall health benefits paid vacation pto and remote office
Cons
If you like to work 80+hours a week and have no work life balance this is the job for you. Unrealistic goals, upper management does not support the working parent regardless of their marketing verbiage. Sr management our out of touch with the market and tends, behind on the last eat technology clients are asking for, brands are stale and they do not want to hear your options or suggestions to resolve. Clients are not well taken care of given the amount load you must manage, on property sellers make sunsets only more than corporate directors with less responsibilities. Incentive trips are unattainable. Very gossipy culture and leadership promote friends can those that are truly worthy. Don't even think about taking time off for family or health issues you will be looked at as a not deflected - business ethics are questionable as well.. Summer Horus are a recruiting tool no one uses them, if you do you are viewed as a slacker.

You have an opportunity to work with truly great people. There is the ability to foster growth for your employees
Cons
Growth is limited at managerial level and you are basically a slave to the company working unending hours. HR is worthless at best. You're at the mercy of whomever you are working under and the if you desire a life outside of work it is impossible. ZERO work life balance. You'll end up making less than minimum wage once all the hours you put in are factored. Raises are crap, health insurance is crap, and it's a thankless job. Run don't walk away.
