Pros

A lot of compute, but not much else

Cons

Compared to literally any other lab in the world with equivalent amount of compute there's a significant lack of focus and quality output. I've seen labs like Anthropic start with similar amount of money and in a few months build a robust infrastructure conducive to all their experiments while at Stability there's no focus on how to get where they want to be at all. It's all vague ideas by people who have no experience with AI in the upper management positions making decisions they're not qualified for. If there was even one technical person in the leadership position the hiring strategy and the company direction could move towards more productivity. They're destroying their goodwill by creating a bloat at the upper levels while not treating the engineers fairly. It also somehow managed to combine the worst aspects of startups and corporations, with both low wages and overworked employees combined with no upward trajectory and no ownership for engineers. Senior people are hired from the outside and don't even stay if they're half capable, anyone who could do good work has already left.

Pros

You will be among the best and brightest in cutting-edge research in multiple fields. Wonderful coworkers, TBH.

Cons

Where to begin? It is impossible to get information out of anyone. The structure is byzantine. Employee roles are duplicated left and right and carry little meaning. Many salaried employees are silent and hard to reach while lower-paid independent contractors do much more time-intensive and stressful work. It's a shameful way to run a company in 2023 and an insult to the dignity of everyone involved. Diffusion of blame and responsibility among colleagues is extreme; having poorly defined groups within the company has led to an environment of injurious paranoia, and I'm not Unless you are already very lucky, this company "for the people" will not do anything for you besides pay you. That is the end of their obligation to you in their eyes. New hires are typically not given support, landing excellent people in a tough spot. Furthermore, it is shocking that a company with a $1,000,000,000 valuation has around five employees to handle HR matters. The company is leveraging the name of mainly free technology and its people as a marvelous opportunity for the tech world, but these people worry me. With so much turnover, you cannot be hiring the way you and operating the way you are are while blissfully pretending it is a viable path for a workplace.
