I worked at Sport Chek part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Engaging way to learn the beginnings of the sales industry through face-to-face client interactions.

    Cons

With the company's removal of commission-based incentives for part-time workers, expect little more than minimum wage for starting compensation.

    Advice to Management

I had a positive experience with management at my location, but I would suggest that shifts for part-time workers (especially students) be considered with more value. I was often given 1-2 shifts a week despite lots of availability and positive reviews from managers and colleagues.

I worked at Sport Chek part-time

    Pros

It is a positive working with products that people really enjoy. You can work with some of the tops brands, and some of the newest products on the market. On some days the team can be strong and productive. Your experience will be dependent on management.

    Cons

Very little room for growth within the company, Pay is stated as "competitive" but it is on par with almost every other retail company for both part-time and full time employees that are not in management. There is a strong sense of favouritism and you will find that managers and employees create groups and stick to each other. If you are in these groups you will feel positive and protected, if you are not in these... groups you may feel excluded and picked on, though being a hardworking employee you can earn the respect of management. You may find that managers display favouritism towards "pretty" female employees. You may notice that in many locations, males are not permitted to be cashiers or partake in cash-handling duties. This can be upsetting when moving along in careers to bank for example and not being able to state any experience in cash handling because your previous employer would only allow female employees the opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Work towards being impartial, treating all employees equally, and affording the same opportunities to everyone. Strive for professionalism at all times.

I have been working at Sport Chek part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

SportChek caries great products that are able to sell themselves. As a sales associate, it makes my job a lot easier when customers coming in have an idea on what they want to buy. Everyone a common interest in sports which makes the workplace more enjoyable.

    Cons

No breaks are given unless shifts are more than 5 hours; if you are on your feet for that long dealing with customers, it can get very stressful. Many part time associates are scheduled full time hours on a regular basis but are not given benefits.

    Advice to Management

A fifteen-minute break after working 4 hours would be very helpful.
