I worked at Smartsheet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Snacks and cold brew coffee - Great product with loyal customers - Nice new office - Everyone dog foods the product

    Cons

    - LOTS of politics in engineering - Does not promote from within. All "leaders" were outside hires during the two years I was there. - New engineering leadership from outside company was not properly vetted. Came in and made terrible decisions without gathering any context which lead to high attrition of senior talent - Low investment and commitment to DEI - Perks aren't competitive with other companies - Culture issues that stem from the top - No vertical growth opportunities despite high performance

    Smartsheet Response

    August 7, 2020Chief Technology Officer

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. I’m glad to hear there were aspects of your time at Smartsheet that you enjoyed and that overall you have a positive outlook on the future of our organization. We’re pleased to now offer a company 401k match in addition to our existing comprehensive employee benefits. With respect to the engineering restructure, as with any change of this nature, there are pain points and many learnings. We have reflected on these learnings and are committed to continuous improvement in all things, including organizational change and communications. We’re pleased that we’re starting to see the benefits of the restructure and feel it will serve us into the future. These results are present in our employee feedback and engagement surveys. While we have brought in leaders and team members from outside Smartsheet, we have also promoted from within. As we continue to grow, both hiring externally and developing internally will be critical to our health and success as an organization. Our holistic recruitment process ensures we’re hiring people who not only bring needed skills and fresh experiences, but who align with our values and are additive culturally. With regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), we recognize that we have room to grow. While we have existing DEI programs and resources, we’re committed to taking more meaningful and sustained action. This year we’re launching required unconscious bias training for all employees, with specific content for people leaders, and additional inclusion training for senior leadership. We’re also in the process of hiring a Director of DEI, which will provide a dedicated resource to focus our organization on this important work. Thank you again for your feedback. If you’d like to discuss any of these topics further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. —Praerit Garg, Chief Technology Officer

I have been working at Smartsheet full-time

    Pros

    - Fantastic coworkers - Great product that customers truly love

    Cons

    - Professional services teams haven't grown nearly as much as the sales org has, increased demand and lack of resources sometimes causes friction/delays - Not great for people who have a tough time with change as it tends to happen often and quickly (dept/structure wise, product updates, messaging - Can be challenging for those who need a lot of structure and consistency

I have been working at Smartsheet full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Smartsheet has a great product, which made it nice to work there, especially as a SDR. They also have great employee benefits and paid time off. The kitchen is always stacked with snacks and food Training is open to helping you when you need it and there are trainings throughout the year. Happy hours and team outings each quarter

    Cons

Smartsheet has done some diversity and inclusion trainings, but they don't have sexual harassment training, and a lot of my female coworkers felt the office had a boys club mentality and were hit on inappropriately at times.

I have been working at Smartsheet full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Really smart people, great product overall, fantastic customers. I know this varies depending on teams but I've found leadership to be extremely supportive and open to fresh ideas. Smartsheet is growing quickly and there are some growing pains. It can be long hours some days but the work you do is appreciated. As a company, they realize there are growing pains and are actively working to address them.

    Cons

Not on my team, but corporately field employees often feel like an afterthought. They offer some benefits and discounts only available to office employees. No 401K match.

I have been working at Smartsheet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great product that every employee uses and loves themselves. Positive attitude of those around you. Complete accountability and collaboration. If somethings broken, it's fixed.

    Cons

Compared to other companies I have worked for, it is really hard to think of any cons. It has the stability of a mature company, with the perks of a growth company.

I worked at Smartsheet full-time for more than a year

    Pros

When I first started at Smartsheet I loved everything about the company. Everyone was deeply invested and we were moving forward during a very exciting time. Benefits are still great, everyone has equity and the company just went public. Great product and I think the support team still provides world-class support to customers.

    Cons

Having said all of that, most of the people that made Smartsheet a success and a great company to work for are gone. Now people are being hired into the organization above the real movers and shakers , causing many of them to leave and killing the culture. I still talk to lots of friends there. All areas of Smartsheet are declining. The really smart people are leaving and the company has completely lost its culture, with boot-licking and back-stabbing becoming more common. This is across mostly engineering and support, but I hear rumors from every department.

    Smartsheet Response

    December 21, 2018Smartsheet

I’m glad to read that you still believe in the product and services we deliver for our customers. It is absolutely true that Smartsheet continues to grow and evolve, and that being a public company requires new ways of operating. A team of 100 communicates and engages differently than a team of 1,000 (not necessarily better, I should add, but differently). But living our values, operating with a growth mindset, and taking the initiative to contribute meaningfully does remain our goal. If you attended the all hands meetings and heard me repeatedly describe how each of us play a role in developing and maintaining culture, hopefully that is something you can carry forward to your next company. I’ve been here for over a dozen years, since the beginning, and I remain dedicated to empowering our team to serve one another and our customers to the best of our abilities. Best, --Mark Mader, CEO
