I have been working at Sierra-Cedar full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This is a consulting company. If you are talented and relevant to the SCI business offerings, you will stay busy. And you will be well compensated. You will also have a lot of flexibility in the way you manage your piece of the business. You might travel, you might not depending on the contract needs. There are options for everything... compensation structure, 401k, benefits (meh...). Generally people are helpful and...

    Cons

It's very easy to be on an island. Communication with upper level management is almost non-existent. There is no clearly defined mission for the company to evolve, so I have some concerns about what is on the horizon in the next 5 years as PeopleSoft needs (core business) decline. Professional development is largely driven by the employee's desire, and reimbursement for out of pocket costs will be considered case...

    Advice to Management

Time to modernize. Let's figure out exactly what the technology landscape will look like and go after it. Spend some money on improvements to internal systems. Provide access to data systems to the teams. Educate and organize the sales effort with an eye on the future instead of status quo and renewals. Be present. More frequent company-wide communication about the state of the business would benefit everyone.

    Pros

The consultants at SCI are tremendous and work very hard. Management cares about quality of life. Clients are like family.

    Cons

Not SCI specifically, but consulting is a tough life. SCI tries to make it fun.

    Advice to Management

The best part about SCI is the people. Not that it is likely, but don't ever lose site of that.

I have been working at Sierra-Cedar full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

SCI culture is to put the client success first. SCI has the largest independent Higher Education consultancy. If you are a student professional, this is the place to be. Multiple services lines with Workday, Oracle & Salesforce, for example. You are able to chart your own learning/growth path. It's fun, rewarding and the people are committed to client success. Leaders are accessible - it's a flat organization that...

    Cons

Overall corporate strategy can seem cloudy. It is not broadly communicated. Uncertainty about ownership structure and long term direction - this leads people to think the company is always for sale Sometimes, you need to self-manage your workload to achieve the work/life balance you need. Working from home, when not traveling to client site is mostly great but difficult for some to manage.

    Advice to Management

Share the corporate direction more broadly. Remind the teams of their impact and importance in support of the direction. Increase industry focus and partnerships - get closer to the client mission.

I have been working at Sierra-Cedar full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

While SCI isn't perfect, I believe the folks running the ship generally have a lot of integrity. They have core values they try to adhere to, and I believe they have their priorities in the right order. There are lots of different ways to advance at SCI and they do care about more than just the bottom dollar. Both as a consultant and now a manager, I've always felt like I was compensated fairly. I think they have high,...

    Cons

It's still a growing company, especially in some divisions, and that always means there are some growing pains. We do expect consultants to be quite autonomous and take the initiative to learn what they don't know. It's probably not the best home for a consultant who isn't willing to work hard and be self-sufficient.

    Advice to Management

Keep being attentive to the needs of the consultants.

    I worked at Sierra-Cedar

    Pros

Some telecommuting available. I don't have anything else good to say about SCI so here's a funny Glassdoor bug, the form element says 20 words are the minimum but the error message says 5. Inputting only five words is invalid so it must actually be twenty.

    Cons

Infrastructure is stuck in the 90s, nobody still there knows how to migrate to better tools and attempts to upgrade internal systems usually blocked by senior management. The overarching thought process of all management seems to be "I still get a paycheck, why should anything ever change?" Very high employee turnover, not just in and out of the company but some folks getting promoted then demoted a few weeks later....
