Wordclass hospital with very low pay, benefits, and flexibility
Feb. 26, 2023 - Research Technician in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
This is one of the best hospitals and research institutions in the world. The name itself is enough to lure the best and brightest to its facilities and institutions. Having worked here is a definite asset in moving to a different position elsewhere.
Cons
- pay is very low, even lower than the other hospitals and research universities nearby - there is hardly such a thing as a raise, and the annual inflation adjustment is around 1-2% every year - benefits are low to adequate, they are enough for you but they're not significant - pension plan is the worst amongst all the hospitals and research institutions nearby - pension plan is defined, but it is a pittance and not an adequate income stream. - there is hardly, if any, vertical career progress - workhour flexibility is OK, not great - middle management is very demanding on skill, work ethic, work throughput, and time - immediate management tends to micromanage so that middle-management expectations are met - higher management shares a very caring and inclusive tone, but it is baseless as employment is very demanding and inflexible - parties are not allowed due to optics - employment celebrations are almost non-existant and if they do happen, the budget is low per employee - employee milestones are laughably sad, such as a little trinket for 15 years of service and $10 at the cafeteria You have to really want to work for the science or the patients. This is not a rewarding position for you if what you want is a decent income with good benefits and pension.

Pros
Sickkids is a great teaching hospital, they really put a lot of effort with their trainings. The theoretical portion is amazing and the clinical educators are all very knowledgeable. Depending on who your manager is, they can be really flexible and understanding . They are not just hiding behind their desks and are involved in supporting their team and patient and families.
Cons
****They will try to attract employees by pushing around their "self scheduling" policy. I can personally say I DID NOT experience the work life balance that was promised. They kept changing my schedule. You do not get enough break in between shifts most of the time it is 3 12hrs in a row, 2 days off. So it made me feel like I was always at work. They will contact you on your days off. They give leadership position to RN that are not experienced enough and it results in conflicts. The pay is not worth all the effort that you put in to work. if you are under 30 Years old you don't get pension.

Overnight shifts are tiring. Part time staff are usually less invested so more inclined to call in sick show up late and not work as diligently.
