I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Renowned Canadian Brand, Huge market cap, has a lot of potential

    Cons

Biased policies, very bureaucratic environment like a public company. Non-cooperative employees. Very less inter-divisional co-operation. Senior management doesn't like change, they hate creative thinking. Very rigid environment, micro-management at its peak. No policy of working from home even during extreme weather conditions. However, if you are friends with senior management then no rule applies to you. You can do whatever you want. Incompetent Human Resource department, no set HR policies for work from home, flexible work hours etc. You are at the mercy of your reporting manager. Always in a cost saving mode even for essential things.

    Advice to Management

Employees are your biggest asset as you are in service industry. Value your employees and they will value you. Don't just take care of your near and dear ones. Frame standard policies for flexible working hours and work from home. Question your VPs if there is high employee attrition in their teams. Fix responsibility and link KRAs to employee attrition.

    I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time

    Pros

-Social Benefits -Nice place for technical students to start -Average salaries -Multicultural -Work from home allowed if lucky

    Cons

-Company culture is so averse to change that the new ideas or best practice vanish from resistance and lack of interest from senior management -Lack of leadership from management and discipline in project management -Definitely an old boys club with questionable hiring practices -You have to play hard politics, even to do your basic job -No lateral moving. Don't even think about a raise or a promotion -Headquarters are so ugly, depressive and employee unfriendly -Retention is on the bottom of priorities. The most talented people keep leaving

Politics at its highest, Racism and nepotism exists. Current Senior Management at the Canada Line is a bunch of jokers and they are ruining the company's prospects

    Advice to Management

Please take a good look at what they are doing at Canada Line Operations and send them home to save reputation of SNC.

    Pros

"Some" coworkers are very knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

Management is way too corrupt. Managers hire their friends and people of the same ethnicity. There is no fair hiring practices. Jobs were rarely advertised in the Calgary Oil and Gas office. Do not trust HR as they are in bed with senior management in the office. Manhours always go to manager's friends not to the people who can do the work. Some managers at the technical discipline level are incompetent and like to blame their employees.

    Pros

-Decent benefits -Co-workers good overall -Work Life balance is OK -Pay is probably slightly better then average

    Cons

-Management continues to say "We Care" but actions say otherwise -Company culture is cliquey in my opinion -Non revenue generating groups (IT, HR, Finance) seem to looked down upon -Training is usually encouraged but hardly ever approved -Team building is non-existent -Billing OT is frowned upon and sometimes rejected -Very little pay increase over the past 5-6 years due to poor performance by Company or Business Unit. -Communication from senior management is usually slow and uninformative

    I worked at SNC-Lavalin

    Pros

Good benefits (health & life insurance, RRSP matching, stock purchase option); my immediate managers/supervisors were nice to work with (we still keep in touch); the senior engineers/designers were very knowledgeable and supportive; most co-workers were good people; gained good work experience as I got to go to clients sites.

    Cons

Unfortunate I joined SNC right after the corruption scandal had been made public so that brought some challenges for the office, the major clients stopped awarding them projects and management was only able to gain minor, low budget projects which put an excessive pressure on leads and the people who were actually executing the work, it really was an extremely stressful time. I actually suffered a lower back injury due to stress which until this date I'm still suffering and have to deal with the pain from time to time. When I joined I was very surprised that they had no training in place (there was some introduction to the procedures) but no specific training for the department. Very little training available. Well, I have to say that the major Con is the fact that upper senior management ended up shutting down the branch where I was working, sadly most people there had worked for SNC for 10+, 20+, 30+ years. They let go a lot of experience and seasoned professionals (oh well, their loss).

    Advice to Management

It seems management has forgotten that SNC-Lavalin is a Canadian company, they (management) prefer to focus their efforts in other markets like the middle east. Don't loose focus, your main objective should be to dominate the Canadian market, letting the competition win in your home country is really a shame.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has designed and built big inrastructure projects so staff have gained great experience.

    Cons

Senior Management (VP level) needs stability and consistency. Staff that are still there trying their best to get things done should be complimented - not criticized.

    Advice to Management

Ensure senior leaders know the details of projects and support the teams that are trying to get things done.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Diversity and opportunity to grow and learn.

    Cons

Poor leadership from senior management. Lack of consideration for the valued and experienced employees. No compassion and poor handling of employees during restructuring. Dishonest and corrupt reputation on the international stage.

    Advice to Management

Senior Management needs to be restructured from the top down to the Director level. As much focus on health for the employee should be practiced as is the current focus on contractor safety which was created for the sake of company liability. Employee personal health such as nutrition, stress management, and exercise should be the focus also for there own employees. Stop expecting one person to perform where one or in some cases two more are required to meet the outlined objectives. This is an unhealthy work environment for your most valued contributors. This approach will set up any organization up for failure.
