I worked at SNC-Lavalin OM full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many nice people work there. Genuine desire existed to make their processes more efficient and improve the bottom line.

    Cons

Too much nepotism. Some management were in roles they were not qualified for because they had friends in high places. Very frustrating for well qualified employees who did not have that inside track. Also HR had no backbone, they were mere puppets at SNC and didn't do much to address high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Not much, now that the property management business has been sold to Brookfield.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin OM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

SNC really cares about their employees. They have a very strong ethics policy, which made me very proud to work for them even in the first place, and it has now been enhanced even more over the past few years. They have a very firm commitment to Health & Safety, not only for technical workers but also for office staff (ergonomics etc.), and they are constantly improving their methods of communicating this and encouraging engagement from their employees - I learned a lot from them about cultivating a healthy cautious awareness of risks and how to minimize the likelihood of accidents, which has been helpful in my own personal life. They also have a commitment to quality, so as an employee who likes to do a really good job, I felt appreciated and valued. The senior management keeps employees informed, not only by e-mail but also by conference calls and town-hall meetings, and welcomes questions and feedback. The benefits are good, including RRSP and company share purchase plan.

    Cons

Certain services such as I.T. are centralized in the head office (which is Toronto for the O&M division); so if you work elsewhere, this means you need to deal with off-site assistance when you have computer problems, which can be frustrating; on the bright side, their helpdesk people are generally friendly, and the response times have improved since I first started working there. Also, the company's internal structure is quite complicated with so many business units that don't have much contact with each other (especially when you include the parent company in your perspective), but this is partly because they have been doing some restructuring, and the trend seems to be toward greater simplicity and/or unity.

    Advice to Management

It would help if you could compile a comprehensive internal directory of business units and contacts, that would allow employees to effectively direct outside inquiries to the correct group. All too often I would receive a request pertaining to some business unit I'd never heard of before, or receive a phone call from a person who was frustrated by constantly getting redirected from department to department in search of someone who could actually help them.
