    I worked at SMART Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    The people were the best. I felt I had really found my place / niche in the world as far as my career goes. Also, I was given the independence to work on projects without constant monitoring. My supervisor trusted me to get my work done.

    Cons

    They laid off so many people, I couldn’t keep up with the constantly growing workload. I had to put in hours of my vacation time to keep up. This practice was applauded rather than discouraged. Senior management was happy to have one person take on the workload of three laid off colleagues. Pay was much lower than standard. I was earning almost $20,000/year less than others with similar experience in other companies.

    I have been working at SMART Technologies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Stable organization in unstable Alberta economy. This is due to product which is smart board and not anything related to oil and gas. Most of the customer base is in Europe and USA. - HR offers you industry standard salary though you were not aware and asked less salary as it happened in my case. I moved from US to Canada and was desperately looking for jab. HR called me and told me that I am asking less than my experience and offered me the number that was pleasant to start with in new country! - Excellent culture! Performance goals strictly related to business that helps you to focus on your projects, nothing related to people area that you need to contribute on (In my earlier organization, there were few goals related to people area and you need to spend time on that as well...I was not happy with that!) - Really quick interview process...I was offered in less than 3 weeks...And I attended 4-5 interviews in this period including first video interview. - Leave policies are excellent and they sure take care of your work life balance. - They do listen to employees and have practice to conduct employee satisfaction survey. Management works on feedback from employees to maintain high employee engagement and positive working culture. - I worked with my earlier employer for 10 years and surely was looking for similar option for long term career. Looks like I have found one.
