I have been working at Roadmunk full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some great colleagues, okay benefits, and snacks in the office.

    Cons

Seems like a lot reviews are being flagged and taken down...so I'll try again: Many employees were abruptly let go under the guise of “poor performance” with no warning. Often, those who are exited are made to be scapegoats for the organization's deep data problems and poor product decisions. There is extremely high turnover and for the most part, those who have been let go have gotten better positions at more reputable companies. The problems in the company begin with leadership. Competent people are kept out of senior positions to protect a very close knit circle who would not be qualified for similar roles in other companies. There is also a level of favoritism that I have not seen anywhere else. Everyone is hired from the same companies. To move up in Roadmunk you have to be friends with or have at one point worked with management at a previous company. On the product side, Roadmunk is simply broken. The app is deeply flawed and instead of working to fix the core offering, resources were diverted to a new product for almost a year. It’s not surprising that this new product has poor adoption and competitors have outpaced Roadmunk.

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time

    Pros

Generic startup perks (flex hours, snacks, can dress casual)

    Cons

    - Suspiciously high turnover. Who’s leaving? Who’s coming? Why? - Inexperienced and defensive management that provides little direction for the company and teams. They, of course, play up the transparent startup culture thing, but like many of the reviews here, this is insincere. Feedback is met with deflection, deflection, deflection...cue the canned Roadmunk Response below. - People here are in charge because they got there first. Which is fine. It’s a startup and a private company afterall, but that doesn’t mean you need to work there. Think twice.

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - very open and transparent across the whole organization - incredible group of people to work with/for - unique and interesting product market - fast paced and challenging - willing to change the tech stack to enable growth - strong culture and core values I think one of my favourite things about Roadmunk is that there is always the ability for individuals to learn and grow. If you want to move to a new area or team in order to increase your skills there is always an opportunity to do so. There is a focus on people being able to grow within the company, and not just on hiring more senior talent from outside. The other highlight is the transparency the company has. There really is an open door policy around the ability to ask questions, know what's going on and be involved. Last, I want to highlight how strong Roadmunk believes in their 6 core values. So many companies have values but can't put into words how they live those every day, I find the opposite to be true at Roadmunk. Everyone who works there really does have them in mind every day and it makes the environment ideal to work in.

    Cons

    - fast paced market means changing objectives - communication could use some improvement I think one of the biggest challenges that people face on the development team is that in a fast paced market we do have to change course to keep up. This can be hard for some people to adjust to and handle the team or direction changes that happen over the course of a year. The other thing is that more in person communication could improve efficiency. There has historically been a lot of online communication and a focus on in person communication could remove some roadblocks faster.

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time

    Pros

Roadmunk provides a comfortable working environment, and offers you rare opportunity to actually grow in both your personal and work life. It is one of the few companies I've worked for that truly follows the values they claim to abide by. The team is tight-knit, which offers you an amazing opportunity to actually work as part of a team, and as I said before, they provide a comfortable working environment to do it in! You will very rarely be forced to rush a task unless it was deemed absolutely necessary, and even then it will be frowned upon and retrospected. They are also very transparent about a lot of the administrative decisions, making the team that much closer!

    Cons

The development team is being spread quite thin due to high number of initiatives. The focus is where it needs to be at the moment--on hiring--but until the teams numbers get to where they need to be, we will be pretty spread out. Not a con for everyone, but because balance is a value Roadmunk holds near and dear, if working long and hard is something you thrive on Roadmunk may not be for you.

    Roadmunk Response

    April 4, 2019VP of Engineering

Thanks for taking the time to submit the review! You've highlighted many of the things we are working hard to enable - tight-knit teams, balance, room for growth to name a few. We do have a lot of things we're trying to accomplish and that is both exciting and scary but I'm confident we're prioritizing the right things at the right times. Hiring does remain a #1 priority for us - but we won't rush it. We want people that will look back at the 6 month mark and know they made the best decision ever to join us. It is why we take the time for candidates to really get to know us and give them the time to assess what we're all about. Always happy to talk in person if you want to discuss more!

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Good Benefits - Relaxed Atmosphere - Free Snacks

    Cons

Roadmunk regularly ignores big problems and doesn't really understand the business. They grew quickly because they were the first to market, but now that there are other competitors, they're really going downhill and their lack of knowledge is becoming more and more apparent. There are serious organizational problems that are ignored, because speaking up about them gets people reprimanded. Management also recently told us to stop giving negative reviews online, since it was making them look bad.

    Roadmunk Response

    March 20, 2019VP of Engineering

Thanks for taking the time to post your feedback. As a web developer, you're on my team so I'm happy to reply. Optimism is a great word for how I think about Engineering and Roadmunk. Why? Because I'm optimistic in the things we're doing to both improve and extend our product. I'm optimistic in the team we're building. I'm optimistic in our market growth potential. And I'm optimistic in our approach to instilling customer empathy across Engineering and Roadmunk. We're in an amazing part of our company growth as we extend past the 70 employee mark. As we grow, we absolutely need to ensure that we're growing our leadership, our communication, our alignment, and our feedback mechanisms. Like everything, this is a spot of continuous improvement and feedback like yours helps us reassess and understand both areas of improvement and areas of great pride. I'm extremely proud of how our Engineering teams and company are growing and evolving and I welcome the opportunity to talk to you more about your feedback!

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time

    Pros

    - great decision making autonomy - lots of opportunities to impact change - good flexibility, e.g. unlimited personal days for when life happens - easy access to all senior execs -- and they do listen to input - phenomenal market space to be in -- it's emerging, which presents unbelievable opportunities - great culture of people that want to make change - great flexibility for work life balance

    Cons

    - we're not moving fast enough (like all startups!) - no RRSP match (yet)

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time

    Pros

Roadmunk is a startup that's growing quickly. And we're learning as we grow—both as a company and as individuals. As a result, there are plenty of opportunities for employees to level up their skill sets and hit fast forward on their careers—whether that be trying on a new role or managing a team for the first time. It's a great feeling to quantitatively and qualitatively see how my work and my colleagues' work is contributing to the growth of our business. You can really make an impact here (instead of being just a cog). Perks like an annual retreat, flex hours, great health benefits and a wellness spending account are all examples of how well we're treated here.

    Cons

There are a lot of junior employees and a lot of us are experiencing the challenges of startup life for the first time. Setting and managing expectations of what it's like to work at a company of this size/stage is challenging. There's a lot of room for improvement when it comes to communication—from top-down and across departments. But I do see the leadership team making a concerted effort to fix this.

I have been working at Roadmunk full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company treats employees really well. There are fantastic benefits and flexible schedules. The company is growing and there are a lot of opportunities. For someone interested and hungry this is a chance to be in from the ground floor of a really successful business. Everyone is engaging and honest in their approach to working towards a common goal. Annual retreat to somewhere beautiful and warm!

    Cons

Having two offices is a challenge and it is often hard to align priorities and cultures. One office may have different objectives to the other office. There are always personality struggles in a growing business where different individuals see a different overall company vision. Management is sometimes so accommodating it becomes a fault that allows non-performing employees to coast by on good will and then foster resentment if they are dismissed.
