Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Pros

There are a few talented professionals and nice people working there.

    Cons

The company is owned and run by a married couple which makes it more of a family business. The management style is chaotic, they had several management changes over the past few months than most company would have had in several years. The pay is relatively below the market especially if you consider that they offer very little benefits.

    Pros

Very competent ground employees, always willing to help out and lend a hand.

    Cons

Presidents too emotionally involved. Do not emulate company values that they are trying to force on employees. Very high turnover rate of managers and employees, company remains unstable at best. Perpetually new managers making decisions without any knowledge of company history or product functionality. Sales representatives and VPs keep selling product features that do not exist nor are they feasable. Overworked employees constantly on the brink of burnout.

    Poisonous work environment

Jan 16, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Montreal, QC

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Office is well situated. Pay is on par with the industry standards. Working for the health industry can be rewarding. Lots of highly skilled employees.

    Cons

Huge turnaround. Around 50% of staff has changed in the last 12 months of so... mostly voluntary departures. Higher management has a tendency to overreact and overhaul everything every few months causing a LOT of stress and instability. Skilled employees tend to leave causing a huge knowledge gap between the "inner circle" who have been with the company forever, and the front line employees. Two categories of employees: - The old guard who have been with the company forever - Everybody else who sticks around for a year or two and then leaves. High stress work environment where a lot of pressure is put on employees who are in turn given a short leash. Huge disconnect between high management and employees. Employees are treated like resources to be used and squeezed instead of being treated like people.
