I worked at Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company full-time for less than a year

    Pros

My boss and coworkers were excellent people to work with. They were safety conscious and worked as a team. The local culture of my old ramp was vastly superior to other ramps in the area. That was what made coming to work fun and bearable.

    Cons

Low pay, expensive benefits and bad union representation. Starting pay is $13.10 and the teamsters that negotiated the contract should be fired. Carman is a railroad title and they have a delivery truck union. Needless to say carmen are a low priority. $13.10 is a poor starting salary especially if the industry pays $17+ on average.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within and give local ramp managers more ability to hire what someone is worth. If a ramp is productive Give them the ability to keep their equipment in good repair.
