Great place to work and grow your skills
Apr. 27, 2021 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
People are great Lots of opportunities for someone to learn and grow their own skills (Learning Fund) Leadership does take the time to understand what you need to grow in your own career
Cons
The company is growing and will have to make changes where it's needed. The changes may result in different work for others that they may not be use too.

- Former Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
- gym and learning fund - work culture (for the most part, depending on your department)
Cons
When I first started with Prodigy, it seemed like an amazing company with great culture and I was very excited to be on board, despite starting while they were already remote due to Covid. This continued for a while until my workload wasn’t manageable to finish in my 9-5 hours, and my compensation was lower than any other job I had in the same role at other companies, yet I was doing double the work. We were continuously promised no more lay offs after an entire department got laid off, and yet here they are again laying off another large amount of people. Other cons: - extreme meeting culture - shady approach to decision making and vague answers to employee's questions - one of the CEO's is very snobby, doesn't bother to learn anyone's name and gives off a very entitled vibe, but the other one is kind and humble - low compensation for large workload

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Prodigy has been through a period of fast growth. As a result, we have had to adjust as we’ve grown in size. This isn’t something that happens overnight - it takes time, effort, risk, and, in some cases, we have changed course when market conditions have dictated. With that in mind, there are a few comments that you’ve made that we’d like to help provide more clarity on: The first is around workload. The pandemic has meant we've all had to learn and manage this new - and likely permanent - format of remote work. As a result, it can be really hard to leave work when work is in your home. Disconnecting from work is just one element of how we experience workload. At Prodigy, we’re actively and intentionally reducing and reprioritizing our strategic plans to ensure that we’re targeting our collective energy at a manageable set of objectives. We’ve also introduced additional time off for team members to help us all to take time and recharge. Additionally, there are things that we as team members need to do, like take advantage of our 10:30-3 core hours and Deep Work options. Block time. Take a break when we need to. Walk away. It’s like putting our phones on DND when we go to bed… we need to learn new ways to establish our boundaries with work and work needs to give us ways to do that. We’re continuing to figure out how to achieve this balance together, as our environment changes. When it comes to compensation, whether that relates to base salary or Total Rewards in general, Prodigy’s program includes a wide array of elements that run above market. This program is continually being revised to stay market-competitive. Our Total Rewards program includes base salary and bonus programs, 100% paid medical and dental benefits, mental health support, equity program, PTO, extra-long weekends, personal days, unlimited sick days, our gym and learning funds and so much more. Recently we undertook a process to restructure for growth, which saw us redeploy people to areas of the company we believe will be most valued by our users. In some cases this process impacted team members who we care about deeply. We put in place as many support elements as we could to ease the transition and help them to find new roles inside and outside of Prodigy. At the end of the day, no one - least of all our co-founders - wants to see people hurt while trying to achieve an important mission. While we hope this response provides some clarity, we do want you to know that you are welcome to reach out anytime to talk more about it.

Pros
- Got to get to know and work with lots of great people - Great benefits - Lots of perks (snacks, gym and learning fund, swag) - Great training and development opportunities
Cons
- Shifting strategies on a quarterly basis caused frustration and burnout - Went from a caring culture to HIGH PERFORMANCE and over night ( literally) - You laid off the whole sales department...... - You shot yourself in the foot when it comes to embedding the program into the K-12 landscape. Form partnerships across the US and leave them "high and dry". Good luck coming back from that. The trust is gone

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective on Prodigy. We value and appreciate the feedback of current team members and alumni and we appreciate that you reached out to us here. 2021 was the first time in our 10 year history that we faced some headwinds as a company, and we needed to make several pivots to respond to external market conditions. That included sunsetting our B2B business in North America. This was a difficult decision from a people perspective, but the right move for our business. Despite the tireless efforts of our great team, it became clear this was not a scalable growth channel for us. Now we’re focused on moving forward. We have a solid strategy and plan in place for 2022 and beyond and we’re excited about what’s ahead. As our company grows, we must evolve. We’re working to hang on to the best of what we were when we were smaller, while creating new norms that continue to make Prodigy a place where people want to be. While some things will change as we get bigger, we’re committed to fostering a great culture and forwarding our mission to help every student in the world love learning. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review. We wish you all the best in your next career move.

DO NOT WORK HERE - We're losing top talent at record pace
Nov. 16, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Mississauga Valley, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Flexibility and consideration during COVID/remote work - Perks and extra benefits (gym and learning fund, etc)
Cons
- Compensation is below market average (this review will get replied to from People Ops saying we have reviews twice a year which we do...But bands are below market average) - The executive team does not listen to employees. I've been in sooooooo many meetings where someone will ask why we are doing it a certain way and verbatim the answer we got was "because X CEO or X executive wants it that way". How is "because I say so" a valid response? - Overwhelming process bloat. Initiatives take forever to launch, and require sign-off from 8-10 different people. - High turnover, with no pathway to replacing senior employees. We also laid off parts of three departments this year -Mid level leaders are leaving due to untenable working relationships with our executive team - Monthly one on ones make it seem like you are re-interviewing for the job you already have. "Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond..." - We secured external investment and have done nothing with it. When asked about it in all-hands, we've received different answers. - We get canned corpo-speak answers during an all hands. You can literally see executives reading off of a script. I'd love it if we could hear real opinions from our executive team. I do have to give credit to Alex and Rohan though, because they are often more relaxed in how the address concerns and questions.

Pros
- Lots of good people - Salary - Small gym and learning fund - Opportunities for career advancement
Cons
Prodigy has lost the good culture and investment in its people that many past reviewers refer to. - They no longer prioritize high impact work and the executive team causes frequent trashing. - There is no work-life balance, making it a terrible company for people with a family. A 60-hour week is typical. - There is widespread burnout, low morale, and high turnover. - It's very process-heavy and yet chaotic.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are happy to learn that you also appreciate the great team here in addition to our total rewards offerings and the opportunities for career development! We recognize that our mission of helping every student love learning is a large one, and requires a lot of hard work. That being said, we aim to achieve our mission in a way that is sustainable, so, please speak with your manager about how we can help find a better balance for you. There are so many ways that we can support you, whether that is helping to prioritize your workload or looking for alternative ways to complete the work. You can also reach out to one of our People Partners who would love an opportunity to support you as well. Effective prioritization of work and resource allocation is something that we are working on across all levels of the organization.

Great place to learn - some things off track
Apr. 2, 2021 - Growth Marketer in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Lots of opportunity to get experience doing new things, great mission, most people very kind. Lots of perks, very inclusive environment, generous learning fund. Upper management makes it easy to set up career paths.
Cons
Some small areas within Prodigy don’t align with values. Taking credit for other people’s work is tolerated. Alliances can make it difficult to collaborate effectively. Opportunities for growth vary depending on your squad.

A Company That Genuinely Wants To Make A Difference
Jan. 26, 2020 - Full Stack Developer in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They put a lot of effort into their culture, and it shows! I care less about the ping pong and smash bros and pizza, those things are nice but they pale in comparison to the other things prodigy has going: - Actual attempts to foster radical candor - Positive work-life balance (yes actually) - Transparency around everything from decision making to salary bands - Plenty of opportunity to learn and grow in your role or move to a new one (there's a learning fund!) - A very strong, transformative vision that you can't help but get behind - Constantly eliciting feedback at all levels - Direct management trusts you to do your job and supports you when needed (at least mine does) - Salary is respectable - Benefits are great and start from day 1
Cons
- Missing a good remote work policy. I'm not sure if management just hasn't considered this yet, or if they are anti-remote. I'm hoping the former because the latter could feel like a lack of trust in employees. Maybe there's a fear that the culture will be diluted. If so, there are plenty of great ways to support the culture across offices and timezones. I gave Compensations & Benefits and Work/Life Balance 4 starts out of 5 because I think remote work kind of fits into both those categories. Otherwise both would have been a 5!

Employer Branding
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience at Prodigy. Feedback from our employees matters a lot to us. We are thrilled to know that you are enjoying our culture and the benefits that we offer! We are dedicated to creating a work-life harmony environment for all employees. Our People Operations team has worked hard to create a policy that promotes work-life harmony. Having tested out a variety of work-from-home policy combinations, and taking many aspects of this subject into consideration, we have landed on a remote work policy that includes a combination of flexible work hours and a limited work-from-home option. We feel that this satisfies both our interest in keeping the team culture intact as well as our employees wishes to work remotely. Thank you again for sharing your feedback with us.

Couldn't ask for a better place to work
Jan. 3, 2019 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are lots of pros, but I'll share four that mean the most to me ... - Personal growth: Thanks to a fairly-generous learning fund and a company-wide belief in continuous learning, I've been able to read books, take courses and attend conferences on a regular basis to accelerate my career growth. I've been with Prodigy for more than two years, and have come a long way in terms of mastering my craft. - Company growth: Prodigy just keeps growing. And growing. And growing. We have millions of students around Canada and United States using us on a regular basis. We're also successfully expanding into markets such as India, Australia and the United Kingdom. It's an exciting time. - Mission: I identify quite personally with Prodigy's mission to make learning fun and accessible. I wish I had this product when I was a kid. So, I genuinely feel like the work I'm doing helps students learn and teachers teach. In fact, I *know* it does because our users tell us every day! - Team members: It sounds super cliche, but I learn something new from a different team member almost every day. I'm incredibly privileged to work with such smart, passionate people.
Cons
Only one comes to mind as I write this. It's great having formal 1-on-1s each month with your manager to encourage feedback and transparency while building a strong relationship. But, in addition to informal weekly check-ins, the questions and discussion topics get a little repetitive.

Great Culture, Fun Place to Work
Mar. 20, 2019 - Anonymous Employee in Burlington, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are many pros to working at Prodigy. 1. Great mission! To help enable every child in the world to love learning. It's not "make the most money" or "be the best at...", it's all about the children and helping them to love learning. Awesome! 2. The People. I have yet to run into 'that guy', and I don't think there is one here. They take their hiring process very seriously, with a technical and a cultural interview, and even if you succeed at one, you might not at the other. Everyone is friendly and enthusiastic about working here. 3. The 'Perks'. Great healthy snacks, tons of games in the lunchroom, ping pong, basketball, and a fantastic Team Building Committee that focuses on making our work life great! Plus a great Health and Learning fund! 4. The Growth. They are building out the team fast and we are growing so quickly. There are lots of opportunities to grow in your role and take on more responsibilities.
Cons
Right now, because of the growth, we are spread out within the building so it makes it difficult to bond with people on different floors. But this is just a short term problem, everything else is GREAT.
