Decent work environment Lots of little events

      Great mission; great opportunities

      Pros

This is not your grandma's PBS - there are a lot of exciting projects happening at PBS these days, and if you enjoy a fairly independent work environment and find the projects you want to work on, it might be a great fit. Pay is lower than commercial, but higher than some other non-profits. To me, the trade-off has been well worth it. One note about some of the reviews posted here: many seem to be related to individual member stations rather than to PBS, the national organization. PBS HQ is located in Arlington, VA. It does not produce shows directly, so anything referencing another location or show production is related to a local station rather than the umbrella organization.

      Cons

Politics come into play sometimes, like at any organization. Some departments are small and there may be limited ability to move within them; however, I've found that HR really wants to keep good people and has helped employees move across departments when they don't have the mobility within their current assignments.

A place where you'll want to retire from

      Pros

The atmosphere is wonderful. Good gentle people with a positive working environment. People work here for many years, and a lot retire from here. It's also very rewarding - it feels good to do work that benefits people in mind and spirit. Also, the work life balance is great! If I were still living in that area of the country, I would have remained working there.

      Cons

Because it's a non-profit the pay is not high - but that is to be expected.

      Great place to work

      Pros

It's a great work environment. Everyone is very helpful, friendly and supportive. There's a good deal of trying to make everything as efficient as possible and make teams work as well as possible.

      Cons

Not much to say here. I guess there are a lot of very busy people. Since the budget for new his isn't always big, rules trend to be broader and each person does more.

      Pros

PBS does great work for the community and that feels good knowing you contributed to something worthwhile. It also has a great inclusive working environment and great employees who really care about making a difference in the world. The benefit package is pretty good for a non profit.

      Cons

Salaries are low for the cost of living in this area

Major politics, favoritism, constant threat of layoffs

      Pros

It's a great product, one that you can be proud of vs. having to apologize for at parties (e.g., defense contracting, pharma etc). Attractive work environment, good location.

      Cons

Frequent layoffs, incompetent management who make bad decisions, wasteful management of public and private funding, and frankly, PBS's model has been antiquated. They simply haven't evolved. It's a sinking ship, sadly.
