Great place to work! With some room for improvement (4.5 stars)
Aug. 27, 2021 - Software Developer in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Hands down, best place to work in the world. You just won't find anything better. - Full transparency on 90-95% of things happening in the company, you really feel part of a collective team working on something meaningful. - A lot of smart, competent, well-spoken individuals who put in the work across all disciplines - Everyone genuinely wants you to succeed and improve - Your voice is heard and listened to regardless of your identity/background and you are always valued. - Very unbiased hiring process - Great overall culture, better than most companies. Folks here are very emotionally intelligent and empathetic, great personalities. - Agile process that really works - Very competent leadership team that knows what they are doing
Cons
- Not a huge fan of remote work. Completely understandable with most technology companies going full remote but it removes opportunities for connecting with people and meeting someone new. Also understandable that in a pandemic world, it isn't entirely possible to go full in-person but at the very least there should be some room for a hybrid approach. - If you are looking for a title and formal recognition from your peers, this isn't the right place to be. You start off as a "Software Developer" and then head into "Senior Software Developer", there is no "Software Developer I" or "Software Developer II" or "Staff Engineer" etc. This can be a good thing in the sense that it fosters a collaborative not a competitive culture but also bad as well since folks can feel discouraged and eventually leave. - Related to the point above, feels like titles are meaningless as Senior designations are given based entirely on experience and not leadership ability and soft skills. I have seen "Senior" Software Developers not showing seniority at all in situations that demand it, as most aren't willing to take the responsibility and accountability that comes with it. My expectation would at least be that they would have a sense of direction of where to go given their accrued years of experience. Definitely not a deal-breaker though, as I heard this is a common problem in most companies but definitely something to keep in mind - Far too many Generalists, ideally there should to be well established go-to devs that you can ask about a specific tech stack.

Pros
I'm one of the co-founders of Myplanet and consider the 5 years I spent there to be some of the best I've had. I've come to appreciate the Myplanet culture more and more as I've spent time away from the company working on a new startup. There's this mutual respect that everyone has for one another that I can't quite do justice in print - it manifests as designers being genuinely interested in the pros & cons of the latest JavaScript framework and developers absorbing this unusual awareness of type & composition. Everyone shares this conviction that what they do is a craft that must constantly be honed, but they're also interested in what's going on around them. After a few years there you emerge with a certain kind of "T-shapedness", if you will. The management team genuinly cares about what Myplaneteers think and are constantly working to make it a great space to work. They're also very selective about the type of work they take on - we said no to far more projects than we've ever taken on. The company also cares a lot about environmental impact and being a good corporate citizen - Myplanet was a b corp hipster, i.e. they were into it before it was cool.
Cons
Autonomy is heavily prized at Myplanet. If you don't deal well with ambiguity and having to make your own decisions, it probably isn't the right place for you.
I'm impressed that you remembered T-shapedness! Thank-you for all of your contributions during your time with us and for sharing your experience. Please do stay in touch as we host more and more events at our office and online.

Like nothing I've ever worked at...
Oct. 21, 2015 - Anonymous Contractor in Toronto, ONRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- High level of autonomy - if you're driven and motivated, you'll get stuff done and you'll enjoy your time here. It's really up to you to make an impact. - Broad reaching work-tasks - you're not going to get boxed up doing the same thing over and over again - Accessible Director Team - if you have questions, if you need advice, if you want feedback the Associate Directors and Directors are available for you. - Innovative - the team is always thinking about "how can we do this better", which is refreshing. They're open to ideas, new ways of tackling a problem, and give you the support you need to be able to take on those projects This company is awesome to work for. The people are bright, smart, helpful and motivated to make an impact. The director team is dedicated, super hard working, and wants you to succeed. You've got flexibility, autonomy and the ability to make an impact. Compared to all of tech companies I've been to or seen - this is unlike any other (in a good way).
Cons
- High level of autonomy - No one is going to tell you what to do in a step-by-step manner. You've got to run with it yourself. If you don't like that, or don't like figuring out how to make it work, then it's really not the right place for you.

CEO
Thank-you for taking the time to share your experience. You have touched on such a key part of our Myplanet culture. As part of our Mastery value we emphasize self actualization and problem solving. We really do work to hire smart and talented Myplaneteers, empower our teams to deliver, and support as a leadership team. We help many of the world's greatest companies undergo digital transformation, so uncertainty about how to complete that change can run high. People who prefer a structured and certain work environment tend not thrive here. If you love making sense of a complex problem, we think Myplanet is a great fit. Please continue to provide feedback to your Associate Directors and Directors so that we can continue to make this company a great place to work.
