I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Labour full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a variety of different jobs available, and interesting work if you can land the right positions. High focus on work-life balance. Pension is very good and salaries generally higher than private sector.

    Cons

Networking is essential to move around in the org. Bureaucracy is heavy, just like every other ministry of the provincial government. To be successful you must manage up. Many decisions are made based on the political climate of the time. Senior management has too many dinosaurs.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time developing current employees into management positions.

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Labour full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of time to screw off during the day without consequences. Lots of time for socializing

    Cons

Loss of self respect, initiative and personal accountability

    Advice to Management

Stop this top down management approach. Can SMG2's and 3's be the one with good ideas? No of course not, any more than Directors of each Region can be focused. I feel super poor management is reinforced with nepotism and cronyism. The system is failing and everyone just smiles and pretends. Thank god the CPO is gone, maybe the next one can do something other than attend meetings and waste tax dollars.

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Labour as a contractor

    Pros

    Good work environment
    parties, lunches, snacks
coworkers are all older, nice family
given a deadline for things and they are accomodating

    Cons

Witness budget and financing wastes - public and tax money is gone to waste a lot but this applies to all of the government sectors
so much is wasted on so little things
    no room for promotion
internal jobs are always network, friend or family filled

    Advice to Management

When you see the potential in someone, be their recommendation or push them to go higher

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Labour full-time

    Pros

Smart and helpful colleagues, access to plenty of professional development, opportunities to advance

    Cons

Many 'entitled' bureaucrats and disgruntled peers, hierarchical, zero influence on decision making, lack of autonomy

    Advice to Management

Stop assigning 'make-work' tasks, make time for your staff, make decisions based on our best advice instead of the path of least resistance.

    Pros

Great people to work with, and the training was great.

The resume system isn't the greatest. Someone could be very well qualified but if your resume does no pass the screening stage you do not get a second glace
