      Great place to learn!

Jan 6, 2022 - Associate National Bank Examiner in Boston, MA

      Pros

Intensive training team program allows entry level hires to learn the ropes of the job in a group setting and under supervision before being expected to do it on their own. You will get the opportunity to learn about all of the different parts of a bank examination through regular assignments as well as recurring outside assignments and developmental opportunities. Lots of opportunities to meet and network with other examiners in your hiring class.

      Cons

It can be difficult to advance past the Associate examiner position due to the long and difficult UCE prep and testing process. Depending on the number of examiners in your office and the number of banks you supervise, you might find yourself overworked or underworked.

      Pros

Interesting work, good benefits, engaged colleagues, rotational learning opportunities

      Cons

Lots of bureaucracy, multiple layers of review, micromanagement, common to have multi-year projects if no judge-imposed deadline, poor/nonexistent feedback and guidance, favoritism, very limited promotional opportunities, minimal pay increases after 3 years out of law school

Decent job for someone interested in banking and regulation

      Pros

Somewhat flexible schedules. Experience in multiple different financial areas. Experienced coworkers are extremely intelligent about banking or specific banking areas. The benefits are second to none. High earnings growth IF you can pass the UCE.

      Cons

The training team can be very inflexible. Even though you're doing something different each exam, you are basically doing the same thing for each exam... Banks pretty much only receive a slap on the wrist unless it's REALLY bad. Bank management can be difficult for no reason. If you have no prior banking experience this job can feel overwhelming. The training is alright but doesn't exactly set you up for success. The UCE is a double edged sword. If you pass you'll make a lot more money and have more flexibilities and opportunities. But you'll also be expected to work more and pretty much become a supervisor whether you want to or not.

      RUN AWAY!

      Pros

You would think it would be a nice place to work, but it's not.

      Cons

They refuse to properly train you. The "training team" consists of not getting trained, then getting talked down to for what is in your boss's eyes, "mistakes." Corrections and "feedback" are contradictory. You will be told you're wrong, for doing what you were previously told to do. They make a big deal about "benefits" but if you hate your job and your coworkers act nice but then throw you under the bus, what's the point.
